April 30, 201313 yr We have this steam hammer thats going to be our letterbox at our new workshop,(when we eventually get it built). It looks bigger standing up than it does lying on its side. Phil
April 30, 201313 yr Greetings all, I did not have the heart to make my old Hawkeye beam hammer into a mail box so I built this one... Keeps mama happy... Jim
April 30, 201313 yr Jim, I like your mailbox very much! The others I just want to bang my head against the wall and cry. It's like seeing an anvil in someone's frontyard being used as a decoration. Such a waste!
April 30, 201313 yr I dont know what it's like in you guys' parts of the world, but around here if someone leaves something by the curb it' up for grabs! If someone left something like that hammer out for a mailbox, they straight up dont deserve it so folks who would use it are honor bound to press it back into service.

I think the local police would be honor bound to escort you to the local clink for a felony if they got involved in this righteous theft......
April 30, 201313 yr In my part of the world, if you could load the trip hammer by hand...I would just let you have it! No since upsetting Paul Bunyon....Now if you brought a hoist and friends we would have to have a disagreement.
April 30, 201313 yr Author Getting shot or shot at is more likely than a call to the Sheriff. This is farming country and a lot of people keep equipment stored outside. Plus having a mail box attached to it would make taking it a federal crime. The guy who owns it runs a large machine shop and trades a lot of equipment. I was there looking at some machining equipment when I saw it. I asked if it was for sale and the answer was "Nope. No one accidentally runs over my mail box anymore." Oh well it just goes to show old hammers are still just sitting around waiting for someone to find them. I wish I had taken a picture of the vise he had mounted outside the door of his machine shop. It looked like a Reed but the jaws were at least 10" wide, unfortunately it was now for sale either.
May 1, 201313 yr hey phil, isnt that the hammer you were going to send up here? No I scrapped that one I thought you did'nt want it anymore, like it laid here for 3 weeks and you did'nt come and get it, so it got scrapped,,,,,,,,,,,sorry.
May 1, 201313 yr While I admire the creative twist, I'm with the sad crowd! I don't need another vise, and I doubt that one will be any worse for wear in a decade or two, but I sure wouldn't mind having it in my shop! And don't get me started on that hammer. Ugh! Every once in a while, I'll do an image search for 'custom mailbox' and get some really neat ideas that I never actually try out. Still fun, though.
May 3, 201313 yr No I scrapped that one I thought you did'nt want it anymore, like it laid here for 3 weeks and you did'nt come and get it, so it got scrapped,,,,,,,,,,,sorry. no wuckers mate, those things pop up every few days round here. dime a dozen.
May 6, 201313 yr Woody,,,,,, if I find another 10 or 20cwt lying around under a bench or in the lantana bush I'll send it to you straight away, wonder how Aust Post would handle it though? promise
