December 17, 200916 yr Looks great! A better setup then my current home shop, that's for sure. I love the side blast forges, yours looks very similar to mine. Good luck, and happy forgin!
December 17, 200916 yr Great space Alec! WAY better than my first shop! Keep us posted on how it all goes together.
December 17, 200916 yr If you think it is a tip now, give it a few months when you have aquired those extra tools you just had too have, the steel, coal - the bits that might come in handy some time and you will soon find yourself running out of space.
December 17, 200916 yr Author Wayne trust me i already am..... and metal iv'e got a whole tool bok full of random scrap from the steel yard and tons more bars of it.....I just cant get enough of it ... that's probably because my last name is Steele with an E , No jokes. haha Thanks for the comments Alec Steele
December 17, 200916 yr Wow, that's such a sweet space you have there. I like your forge, and that nifty little bench too :-)
December 17, 200916 yr Great set up. Better than my leanto. BTW thanks for the great shots of the water cooled tyuere :)
December 18, 200916 yr well ive had this shop for a couple of years but recently made the forge into a brick forge i think it added to my setup . will be makeing a brick chimney also eventually .
December 18, 200916 yr DA, I see you have the horn of your anvil to the right. Are you a lefty, or do you just prefer it that way? Nice shop btw.
December 18, 200916 yr Alec: That was my grandfather's name. He forged iron his whole life, starting as a young apprentice. Anyway, your shop looks frighteningly like mine. I guess great minds think alike. ;)
December 18, 200916 yr Author Thanks again I don't want people babling over my shop all the time LETS see YOUR setup haha Alec P.S. This morning i will be having my forge up and running I will show you guys pics of it running. sorry that isn't gonna happen-It's snowing :( Edited December 18, 200916 yr by dphigh it snowed :(
December 18, 200916 yr Alec nice shop, I also like the horn to the right. I don't know if you know this but if you take muriatic acid and water ( don't know the mixture) you can clean the mortar off the bricks. You did a nice job on the forge I hate to see the mortar on the bricks. Good luck....Keep the fire burning and the metal hot!!!!!
December 18, 200916 yr I love to look at the pictures of everyone's setups, but have to laugh at the open air smithy's....it was 20 below here last week. I had both the furnace and the forge running! Love that bi-product heating when we get to those temps here in Montana.
December 18, 200916 yr DA, I see you have the horn of your anvil to the right. Are you a lefty, or do you just prefer it that way? Nice shop btw. ya ime a lefty... and ive used the horn ether way but find i like it to the right .. as far as the mortar on the bricks ive got the forge so dirty now you dont even notice it.. as far as open air forge setups in arizona they are the way to go ! my shop is part of a museum and the whole front is hinged so it adds shade ! its been cold here (down to the 60s ) so the bricks are nice for radiateing heat!
December 18, 200916 yr Author I haven't set it up yet because the snow was 6" deep and three feet in my shop so it kinda slowed things down. oh well hopefully i will get it up tomorrow........ alec
December 19, 200916 yr Alec, Glad to see the side blast forge. You have a nice smithy started. Happy Hammering! HH
December 19, 200916 yr Author Iv'e got it up and running.........it works like a beast, it's brilliant! Much much better than the forge i used to use :) i will put on pics later alec
December 19, 200916 yr Alec nice shop, I also like the horn to the right. I don't know if you know this but if you take muriatic acid and water ( don't know the mixture) you can clean the mortar off the bricks. You did a nice job on the forge I hate to see the mortar on the bricks. Good luck....Keep the fire burning and the metal hot!!!!! Just go into a builder's merchant and ask for 'brick acid'. It's about 3 quid a gallon.
December 19, 200916 yr Alec, just being nosy, whereabouts in Norfolk are you? I'm in Newmarket. Forecast is for more snow tonight:rolleyes:
December 19, 200916 yr Author David.e . i sent you a p.m. telling you......more snow over here, kinda annoying because the snow gets in my forge. alec
December 20, 200916 yr This shop was in my town and is at the County Fair grounds, we still use it and is a great place to work. The only draw back you have to bring our own hand tools. I pretty much empty my shop out.
December 21, 200916 yr Here's some pictures of my shopand some stuff I made. I took half of the garage to make the shop, the other half my wife gets to park her van in it. Built a 8'x10' shed to store stuff from garage. messed up I'll get the pictures posted. Edited December 21, 200916 yr by Bad Creek Blacksmith need to add pics
