  1. Naval Brass and forging brass are both copper and zinc, Navel has a tiny (<1%) amount of tin and forging brass has a couple percent of lead. Both forge easily. Never seen a brass that wouldn't forge. Sure gotta watch the heat though. When annealing, fast cooling is just for convenience, makes no difference in the resulting hardness.
  2. Other than the grind, I'd say the warning is probably because hot chiseling will harm the temper for cold working.
  3. Tell ya what I've learned being around Brian; he has done so much with so little for so long, that he can now do anything with nothing!
  4. There are old smiths, and there are bold smiths, but there are few old, bold smiths.
  5. ALL molten metal can cause explosions when they come in contact with water!
  6. Just for future reference: Is there any good reason a cone has to have a square shank? Just something to think about. For a blacksmith, square is easier to make, for a machinist, round is easier. Nice job on the cone.
  7. Mind if I parse your sentence a little differently? "You heat the blade.............. for quenching in a bath of molten salts". even confused me the first time I read it. If there is any confusion, Matt meant "You heat the blade in a bath of molten salts, for quenching" .
  8. No, it's true solid-state welding (as they call it in the technical stuff) not fusion welding. Much like mokume.
  9. Yep, finally got around to trying it. I used silver brazing flux, but borax should work. You need a long heat because copper conducts the heat away so fast. Seems to weld like wrought iron.
  10. Wayne is just too humble. He sells grinders and kits and videos. Go to his site --> WAYNE COE ARTIST/BLACKSMITH
  11. At least it was homogeneous. Never heard that, got a source?
  12. Yep, the most popular machine I supply and the one you see in most of the videos runs on 220 single phase.
  13. I think his analogy itself was overkill! I think he was just pointing to their relative effectiveness at their intended job.
  14. I can tell you that in my operation, I was using around $300 per month in propane and now using induction exclusively, my electric bill has gone up about $35 to $50 per month.
