What did you do Outside the shop today?
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks replied to TWISTEDWILLOW's topic in Everything Else
Debi and I have quite a collection of vinyl, 78rpm, 33rpm, 45rpm and a player for them. Some date from the early Victrola days and are quite valuable. One title of the single side 78's is Roamin' in the Glomin' by Harry Lauder date October 18, 1911. A lot of albums from the '60s on. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. The one thing I didn't see mentioned in the welding dissertation, is I wire brushed it clean before each heat and flux session. Clean of scale etc. goes a long way to a successful weld. Yours is definitely welded (good job) but it would have been easier by the brush cleaning. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus

Metal cantle binding for saddles
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks replied to Dixon's topic in Cold Worked Iron and Steel
Welcome from the Ozark mountains. If memory serves me there is a thread about this. Another saddle restorer had an awful lot of insight in it. I'll try and find that thread. Maybe someone will remember it and link to it for you. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus I think this may be it. https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/68939-pre-1900-mild-steel-vs-modern-mild-steel-any-differences-in-how-you-work-with-them/ I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Welcome from the Ozark mountains. That also could be just the style of hammer, like a French cross peen hammer. Lots of hammer styles are made in the U S by many blacksmiths. Might ask your family member where they got the hammer, the reply might surprise you. If the answer is Harbor Freight then a good bet it was made in China, if a Blacksmith down the road made it it's custom made. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. It followed me home

We had a mechanic at a dealership I worked at that was a CB fanatic. He had a linear amplifier connected to his CB in his truck that would boost the power to something like 1000 watts. That was in the early 70s when ECM computers were new technology in cars. He could drive down US 1 key the mike and shut down any car near with an ECM. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus -
I think you are right, could be a #40 that looks just like the 140. The #40 blowers usually are marked on the top of the gear cover, though I've seen some without any markings there. So many old blowers have had parts swapped about making ID a challenge. Here is a link to a thread about the #140 some good info. I'm pretty sure the picture of the one I put in that thread is a 140. https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/60037-identification-of-champion-blower/ I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Vacuum Cleaner

Funny how the mind works (or not). Mine is a SHOP-VAC 10 gallon wet/dry. It has the standard 1 inch hose and an optional 2 inch hose with a long attachment to clean the house gutters from the ground, no ladder work for that aggravating chore. There is not much it will not pick up. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus -
What blower are you working on? All the one's I have are Champion's. Maybe start a new thread in the Blowers sub forum. If I remember right TwistedWillow solved that lateral movement by putting C-clamp washers on the shaft. I'll try and find the thread. The shaft that the fan is mounted to has a lateral adjustment screw & lock nut. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus

Budget forge success
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks replied to WyomingWhitetail's topic in Blacksmithing, General Discussion
The heat going up the burner that is turned off is called the chimney effect. Just pull the burner not turned on and plug up the mounting tube with a piece of soft fire brick trimmed to fit in it. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus -
I have found that it is really not necessary to remove the gears, in fact it is near impossible to get them back as they were because over the decades of use, they take a set. A good cleaning is all that I do when restoring those blowers unless the bearings/bushings are in desperate need of repair/replacement. Which can be a chore to find those parts. Sounds like the generator is the problem. Do you have a plug in for it in the shop? My old Tombstone welder runs fine on commercial power but when I tried to use it with my generator, I also got end pits. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus

Anybody know these markings?
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks replied to Michael Hehr's topic in Anvils, Swage Blocks, and Mandrels
I noticed that too. So many of our contemporary folks and masters gone. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus -
Jim very nice candle sticks. One way to make them convertible from candle sticks to tea light candles is to make short cup candle stick holders, held to the existing base with strong small rare earth magnets. then remove them for tea light candles. I made a single candle stick like that a long time ago and it worked a treat. Sorry I didn't think to take a picture. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus
