  1. I'm not sure but it sounds like the blower is putting out too much air. Do you have a way to reduce the air to the burner, not sure what an air mixer is? There are a few folks on the forum that use N/G and blown burners, they will probably weigh in shortly.
  2. Success is not measured in how easy it is, but by the amount of determination it takes to get where the object, project, skill takes ones self to finish.. ~ jlpservicesinc
  3. I thought about starting a new thread but then going back through this one decided not to. We are still doing OK and observing all the precautions recommended and staying on our mountain. Fortunately I kinda like being a hermit but miss going to the BOA meetings (which is another story). Looking back at the numbers we all posted early on with nostalgia. Back in April Carroll County had I think 3 confirmed cases and no deaths. Yesterday we have 2,125 confirmed cases and 35 deaths. At least the supply chain has returned to normal around here, so we haven't had any problems keeping stocked, except for canned dog food, our store we shop in hasn't had any in months. Fortunately the Walmart near us has plenty so we stock up when we go there. It's a strange new world and I hope everyone is getting along OK too.
  4. I've had to do that with mystery steel for springs. I usually take a piece, shape it in a V then quench & temper and test it in a vise to compress it to see if it snaps.
  5. Welcome from the Ozark mountains. Sorry to hear about your friend Ken, we have lost too many lately. I think by teaching his daughter, it will keep his spirit alive for everyone.
  6. Might work better to use the dragons breath from your propane forge or hold it over the fire from a charcoal forge. Check the color frequently, I would go with blue.
  7. Speaking of shocking, my brother was a mechanic at a motorcycle shop years ago. He took a wooden stool and drove a nail down through the seat, hooked it to a Model A coil. When ever someone new would come over to his stall and sit on the stool, he would push a button and get ready to run. Many times I saw someone chase him around the shop. Of course my brother was crazy, I had watch him shut down many of the bikes he was working on by grabbing the spark plug and frame at the same time to ground it out.
  8. Could be your propane tank. That will have a safety valve in the shutoff preventing too much gas being released when opening the valve or in case of a bad leak in the hose. Try opening it slowly to prevent the safety from engaging. Did the regulator come with the forge and what is it's pressure rating?
  9. Springs like that (mostly for muzzleloader locks), I usually temper at a higher temp. I heat to non-magnetic and quench in oil, then float them in my molten lead pot (700° F), till the lead no longer sticks to them and cool in the air. Very seldom do any of mine fail.
  10. The absence of a pritchel hole usually indicates pre 1830 as Das said. The lack of one is easy to address simply by making one separate from the anvil attached to the stand or one that fits in the hardy hole. To me it looks a lot like an early Mouse Hole or one of the many makers who worked for them then struck out on their own making anvils. By any means, it's a great looking good sized (154 pound) anvil and ready to go back to work.
  11. I would hate to meet the person who could swing such a monster. Paul Bunyan perhaps if he wasn't a myth.
  12. Are you sure your oven is a true 400° F? Most oven thermostats can be off by quite a bit and require an accurate thermometer inside.
  13. My chances of winning is about as good as them sending me the money by mistake.
  14. Although I have never had one apart. Maybe someone who has will chime in. I think you have to take the fan off the shaft, then the gear box should come off. There is a parts break down on page 110 of this old catalog. http://www.bamsite.org/books/canedy.pdf
  15. How does it sound when you tap it over the whole face. If it has a ring (without anything to deaden it), I'd say it's good to go.
  16. This should answer that question. There are different links in that thread to making retort's.
  17. Looks very good to me, I would have done the same thing, grab it before someone else does. Now I hope you have read about not doing any grinding, milling or welding on the hardened face. A wire brush on an angle grinder is OK, to take off the rust and a coating of BLO or paste wax will keep it from rusting and retain the nice patina.
