  1. Try cleaning an aluminum screw with acetone and screwing it into a clean piece of aluminum. It will weld (gall). Yes any clean flat two like materials will join. Not difficult but disconcerting
  2. I went 4 days without shaving on vacation once. People started avoiding me as if I were a criminal so off it came. Clean shaven ever since.
  3. Gote sir I have always been told that leaf springs do not flex in the center section of the leaf. Have I been misled?
  4. Frosty remember how many of us started? we tried and failed then tried again. The internet has ruined many new people because they don't try many times before asking. Remember those good old days??
  5. Buy every type of file you can like frosty commented .The more high dollar they are from a good tool store (not a hardware store) the better they are. Just keep them separate from each other so they don't touch or they will damage each other. If you know a machinist ask him about how to care for them and which brand to buy. They are life savers in metal work.
  6. Take them to a chrome shop they will more than likely strip them for free for the chrome.
  7. If you make this hammer, how long are you going to make the hollow head and what diameter? It would be good to measure some of the larger ones (4--10) pounds. The shot goes to the back on the swing start and lands on the face on blow contact. A sledge dead blow requires a lot of stamina to accomplish much work. Mine is a rubber head 4 lb. I used it to BUMP pins from aircraft landing gears. The 10 lb for breaking loose large nuts. They separate men from boys I often wondered which I was!
  8. Kinda proves the saying "1 anvil attracts more anvils".
  9. I like those straight simple lines in the bench and the gate. They are calming and accomplish what you intended. Well done
  10. When you get tired of beating the nubs in and keeping the bar to size. You will begin to ask yourself why you started. Wasted fuel and tired arms is the end result.
  11. When he opened the shop door he opened a door for you. I first thought of taking him something home made from the kitchen. That may work however find him a bag of coal and see what happens. When he smells the coal fire he will be a different person. Back in the saddle again!
  12. I have one question Outlaw, how far from your forge is your rail anvil? The best distance is one step or a turn around step. If more than that we waste time and heat. Show us a photo of your setup.
  13. I used to use muriatic acid for scale removal. My only worry was inquisitive neighbor children Be safe!
  14. Have you thought about work hardening it with simply hammering on the end. It does work. It won't be a deep hardening but will be useful for hot metal.
  15. I would mount the blower under the front of the table. Mount it so the knob is easy to reach. You may need more tubing but that blower should empty your fire pot on full blow.
  16. Use it for making fish weights. You do fish don't you?
  17. You got a winner! Don't worry about the sway. You will soon learn to work with it.
  18. Just use it and it will serve you well after time if there is problem ask again. what to do to repair it. Doesn't look bad to me.
  19. All the above is true. However "new" steel is easier to work to make forge control tools such as clinker picks and coal rakes. Knocking in the nubs on rebar gets old. But if it is all you can find enjoy your self. Square bar or round is easy to buy and a pleasure to work with. Remember the rule work round to eighths and round up and square bar to what you want. Make it long or pointed or bent. And enjoy the pounding and shaping.
  20. Wives are strange wonder full creatures. Mine has all kind of ideas also.
  21. If you don't like the rounded side step around it and use the other side! Good looking anvil give it a work out!
