  1. wow Great use of an old coil spring I have always liked that design you must just about able to make one with you eyes closed what vehicle did the spring come from? A couple of years ago I came across a burn out car in the bush and grabbed two coil springs the fact that it was a Saab made me think about the quality of the steel say as opposed to a coil from a Korean car.
  2. That's a very unique design you can see traces of it in some of your other work.
  3. Yes your right Thomas that sounds like the way to go,I realize now that if I want to make the knife in one piece with a metal handle I need more stock that end or if I want to add a handle the original stock size would probably been ok.This one seems to be in between. But I don`t think it was a complete waste of time because its shown me that I can weld up spring steel and re forge it, I was half expecting it to crack or delaminate.
  4. Thanks neg , have to think more about a handle.
  5. The extent of my knife making is limited to a couple of simple bench coil spring ones, lately I have made a couple of fire pokers with about 4inches bent over welded (electric arc) and re forged to form the handle. So here is a coil spring knife made similar, steel was preheated before welding.knife is not that great but I was interested to see if the thing would crack or fail during the process of forging, welding ,heat treatment so far all good..I do plan to put it to use in the back yard.
  6. Even good name bought center punches need re sharpening, I made a coil spring one some time ago using similar methods as you I think if it was tempered to harder than golden straw the tip would probably fail.
  7. Friedrich`s cross made from 3\4 cut with hacksaw great design
  8. Good job you just add more value and class to the old table
  9. I was going to comment on what you mob are discussing but didn't want to sound like a dag
  10. Very nice simple but interesting design and looks great installed.
  11. That's a good picture clearly showing the thickness of the face plate and why you should not grind it.
  12. Hi fergy That anvil looks in good condition and looks from the photo to be 100 to 200 kgs if you can not get any weight numbers off it you have to actually weight the thing.Even in Aust $2000 is top dollar. I brought a anvil over 200kgs in good nick recently for $900.Like Iron dwarf says you can do a lot with a 60 kg anvil then trade up later.
  13. The best way I found to quieten down my pw is to have a safe tool in the hardy hole, tight, I made up a 5/8 mild steel tapered round bit to wedge the pritchel hole and a large magnet under the heel. As Dogsoldat pointed out most of the ring comes from the heel, I also have a chain around the waste but the mods to the heel is the difference between ringing like a tuning fork or a dull thud.As far as the price goes that would be a good buy over here.
  14. No I don,t know who repair this anvil, I just saw it up for sale again. It does look pretty good though.
  15. Looks like this sad anvil may have survived to work another day
  16. Nice anvil, bargain price, If you use an IPhone to take the pictures you need to have the phone side ways with the camera lens top left, I made the same mistake
  17. I really like the style and size.
  18. Good video, lately I have been wondering how those cross are made so thanks.
  19. Great video, good skills and I like the fiddle
  20. Just tried my PW it has rebound on the face between the hardie hole and end of the heel but not as much as the main face .I think size may also play a part due to mass under the heel this Pw is around 470lbs,when I tried my other anvil 160lbs it had very little rebound at heel end and its forged steel.I would not worry too much about it you probably will not be using that section for serious forging anyway.
  21. Thought you might be interested, someone in Parkes is selling a hand forged camp oven lifting tool on ebay, only basic design.tried to sent you a pm but unable.
