  1. OOH Boy. Doesn't sound good. I've dug thousands of post holes on my ranches and have never worn a set out. I did do a repair on one for an old friend in Montana in the early seventies and used a chunk of bandsaw blade from local sawmill. Worked fine. No tempering.I've always been in rocky country and use a spud bar to loosen up the soil and basically use the clam shell type digger to remove the dirt.I have had to re-draw the point on my spud bar a number of times. I think good steel with no formal tempering should work fine.
  2. That's a pretty impressive reconstruction for a Lazy...... My main anvil is a 200# Haybudden. I'm left handed so the far side to me is really clean, but I need to do some surfacing to the near side.
  3. Lot's of us getting old. I say a prayer of thanks just for getting up in the morning......
  4. Tang attachment?? thanks,Eric S.
  5. How about some pictures please?? I'm still trying to make up some tooling to make drawer pulls for MY wife!!!! Gotta keep em smiling!!!!!! thanks, Eric Sprado
  6. I took the top curved section drove a nice wide chisel into it,then a bigger fuller and made a NICE leafing tool.Just straighten out the rest of clip so it can clamp in your leg vice.
  7. That nice fellow from Canada who has lots of blacksmith stuff on YouTube has a YouTube video on hold downs that includes one with a bike chain. Google search should find it. I'm having a Senior moment and can't remember his name...

  9. Mild steel should do. I even "cheat" and make quickie "twisted jaw" tongs and never have had any break.. Hope you purists don't hunt me down and lynch me for making twisted jaw tongs!!!!!
  10. Larry: Is the whole thing made from the same size stock. In other words -If you're using 5/8 for the stem is the head made from 5/8 upset by your press? thanks,Eric Sprado
  11. Johnsons Paste Wax is my weapon of choice too.....Do be careful about the fumes though. Well ventilated is the rule...
  12. If all looks right-you really have to have lubricant squirt bottle in hand(or near) and be lubing the clutch FREQUENTLY.. I have a little graphite added to my oil for extra slickum...
  13. They're right. Hardie holes are ALL different. Just need to do some fitting. Check out hole to see if it needs some simple work, then start fitting your tools to it.My 200# Haybudden has the worst hardy hole I've ever seen.Sloped. Someone told me they thought it was from years of smacking hold downs in it by a prior owner. Don't know.
  14. Maddog: Please let us know how that works.Keeping R-factor up and controlling wool dust is always a trade off that we like to improve on!!!I'm going to be building another small forge to save fuel on small projects...
  15. Look in local Yellow Pages under "Safety Supplies" Most safety supply outfits have nice, low priced Kevlar blend gloves. They give me one more heat before having to go to tongs....
  16. Most towns have used restaurant supply dealers. They all have a bunch of beat up stuff that they sell cheap. I buy nice sized old stainless steel steamer trays with lids for about three bucks. They're great for knives. These places are a blacksmiths dream!! Old burners, quench vats(LARGE Ones)rolling tables, stands. Find one in your town and go have fun...
  17. I ALWAYS have the same frustrating problem. When someone shows a link to the gallery I just get the GALLERY with no idea where to go from there. I love this site so much but somebody PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE fix this picture thing. I hate to be a whiner-but this is such an ongoing problem... thanks in advance,Eric Sprado
  18. Oh: I thought you meant the "computer" we all had in our pants that ruled us as young men!!!!!
  19. Consider pity bestowed! Hope you figure out the car.....
  20. I'm fairly computer literate but for some reason I can't get pictures resized right for this site either.... Works everywhere else except here. I'll have to ask my resident "geek" to help......
  21. Jump on the trade!!!!! 110 wire machines are as common and useless as belly buttons....
  22. I thought old power hammers and anvils were as common as belly buttons in Michigan??So much for myths....
  23. Thanks for the replies. Both Surplus Center and Automation Direct have great buys. Check out Surplus Center's catalogue online. It's a blacksmith's candy store. rLarkin: My surplus LG can be yours for 1750 before I put motor on and tinker with it. It is a really clean frame with NO cracks or welded spots. The drawing dies look like they have had little use. Sell it to you on time.....You would have to drive up here to Oregon...
