    Its funny you mention that..Down here they wouldent look twice at a pair of knuckles. They are sold at every flea market. Though this is rural Appalachia. Solving disagreements with violence is still sociably acceptable here.. :blink:

    Mine too, I remember when he posted here. Great guy, its a shame and loss that's hes gone. Strikers are some of my very favorite things to make. We started to make a lot of duel purpose strikers for the bushcraft crowd the last few years and animal head strikers. Its great fun to make something artistic that serves such an important function.

    I have that episode saved on my dvr. Peter Ross is a smith of the highest caliber. Ill admit it didn't make much sense to me either at first but now it kinda does..Regardless the man knows what hes talking about. Take a look at his tools sometime, what he makes like the calipers and such. He did a fine episode about making hinges too.

    Yes, every barrel Ive seen done was done with a butt weld.

    Check out the "House Brothers Project"..just google it, they forged/built a rifle from scratch for the CLA..There are some WIP pics on the site..One shows the cock being forged.. Also there is another member on here that has made locks but his screen name escapes me at the moment????

    Its one of my my(if not THE) most wanted self projects..To weld up my own gun barrel. There are two guys close that have bore cutters and rifling presses. Check out the "House brothers Project"..just google it.The House brothers live here in Ky and are pretty famous rifle makers..They made a rifle from scratch for this project. Welded up the barrel and made everything down to the screws..This is my grail project..

    barrels are usually welded up from a 4" wide x 1/2" thick flat..

    Peacock Im sure your right. I was going on former owner info..Knock on wood it has been a wonderful machine...It was used 15 years full time by a industrial smith before I got it but he had pretty much rebuilt it and he took wonderful care of it.

    Yes, mine is a 1904 model(#1104) and it does not have the pass through hole..

    I know several knifemakers who use kerosene with perfect results.

    Just part of life, it was mine anyway..Im/was a farmer/welder/Blacksmith..My hands are so rough, scarred and callused that I haven't had a blister in years..I started working on the farm and woodshop when I was too small to remember..My hands are so big I have to order gloves to fit and even then they wear out to fast for my taste. So over the years my hands have just gotten tougher and tougher..On the other hand proper handle holding will greatly help.

    My first one was free but I don't care one bit to pay for an anvil if I have the money..If I had the extra money and didn't need another piece of equipment Id pay $2000 for an anvil but I wouldent put myself out for it..If I want something Ill get it, that's the only reason I need..

    I have found my 200 fisher to be too small on a couple of occasions..Though most people have a hard time believing that..

    Ive read really good stuff about hardalloy 58..With two layers its suppose to get between 55-60rc according to the manufacturers specs..Also is heat treatable..
