  1. Did you ever realize that your gonna' have to break down and buy that piece of equipment whether you want to or not? Ive said for years "Id like to have a cone" Well now Lisa is selling to many spiders/trivets and different kinds of chain configurations with rings in them..Do you know how aggravating it is to try and true up a 8"-10" ring on an anvil  Then its never really right anyway
  2. I drove over two hours once for a "perfect condition 400# colonial style anvil" that turned out to be about 200# missing about 1/4 of the faceplate..The seller was a tool collector and a serious one at that..I took his work without measurements..
  3. Your right, I had never thought about that and I knew it..Thanks! Its still a good ol' anvil, you just have to work around its character.
  4. My sister graduated from UK with a Arts degree..Ive been in that shop but before the hammer was built..Im gonna send this to her and see if she knows anything about it..
  5. I like to ask potential sellers some measurements before I make a drive..I have never and I mean never went to look at an anvil that was "guestamated" for weight that was even close..200 pounders turned out to 100 pounders and 400 pounders turned out to be 200 pounders..

    A few new Tongs

Thanks guys, practice is the key to good tongs. Ive learned that the hard way..You can make the nicest knife, axe or hammer but if you cant get the consistency down you cant make tongs for squat..Ask me how I know? LOL Tongs are one thing that can still humble me.
  7. Yes it does, I can take a pic of it if you like?
  8. I have a pile of RR spikes I just got that Ive never seen before(and ive went through a lot of spikes) They came from the scrap yard..They are about 3" longer than a standard RR spike..Just like a normal spike but that much longer..Pretty cool.

    A few new Tongs

Now Ill admit, Im not the best tong maker..Never practiced it enough to be honest but they work..Two pairs of bolt head tongs, two pairs of pick up tongs and a pair of round stock tongs..
  10. We made Lisa a new demo forge this past week..Only thing left to do it attach the wheels.. Fold up handles so you can roll it like w wheelbarrow.
  11. This is a Trenton farriers anvil I rescued from the scrap yard..Its 142#, pretty good size for a farriers anvil..Now, Ill start by saying this anvil still has great rebound and is solid as a jug. the edges are even in good shape but as you can see from the pics she has seen the use! the sway is even and smooth..Though the sway or dimples in front of of the rear pritchel hole has me cornfused  Im wondering how that dished out spot got there???
  12. I much prefer a more rounded peen for general forging but we have some more "pointed" peens for specialty work. On a side note I greatly admire Peter Ross's work, his tools and clean white forgings are nothing short of spectacular.
  13. You guys are lucky, you cant touch a decent 400 around here for $100. No way, no how..$200 all day long if you ever find one!
  14. We have a 142# Trenton farriers anvil(kinda big for a farriers anvil) that has a good 3/16" sway in the face and is even swayed around the pritchel holes! I cant imagine how many shoes have been made on it. It was never "abused" by the looks just used, used and used so more..The edges are good and it still has great rebound its just swayed to death. you can still forge on it, just cant straighten anything on it :D
  15. Anyone doing festivals yet? Our first one is next weekend..Just finishing up a new anvil stand and demo forge..Really need to get working on inventory bad  Hows your festivals been so far?
  16. Im in need of lining a fire pot but I don't have access to natural clay..Believe it or not clay is just not a frequently occurring natural material here,,What morters or manmade materials do you use to clay firepots with?
  17. Dave had mentioned that one to me once before..He also said they had a good selection..Hows the prices?
  18. Ok guys, we live in Eastern,Ky..Our two local steel suppliers are killing us..We just paid $15 for a 12' stick of 5/16" square  Some stuff is reasonable but a lot isn't. Notably square bar..Im looking for a place within driving distance of Easter,Ky. Kentucky, western WVA and southwest Virginia that I can pick up a big load and save money..We are paying far too much here..They don't carry any square stock in inventory and the simplest things lie 1/4" round bar have to be ordered. When we have to order steel like the square bar they are killing us..$15 for a12' stick of 5/16" square is just ridiculous I think.
  19. I have a 142 pound Trenton farriers anvil that looks like a broke down bank mule..Swayed in the belly and even swayed and dipped around the pritchel holes!! Im having a hard time figuring that out? Its still workable and the face is as hard as can be but the body is very soft..
  20. You too???? I though we were the only ones graced with those clowns..
  21. That's something I wish we had more of, auctions..You may hear of one every few years..No such thing as estate auctions around here, rare as can be.
