  1. Your rolling anvil is MUCH nicer than my rolling anvil but my rolling anvil was just so we could get it to the Nephew's house.
  2. Mikey, thanks for the information. I have 2 vintage blow lamps as they were called and wondered if they could be used to heat a forge. I made new leather seal for one and tested it with 90% alcohol but never worked up the nerve to test with gas. The jet would make an alcohol flame but only with a pilot light as the torch was meant for gas.
  3. I can tell you that you ain't kidding. I spent all day with my nephew building the anvil stand and here is what Thomas A Powers (his own bad self) said about the height. If you had researched here you probably would not have thought it...Some of the "old" blacksmithing books suggest it; but then they were doing a very different craft in some ways---got a striker or 3? That is a "zero sugar" comment I thought I had done my research so I took the comment as the constructive criticism is was meant to be.
  4. Any chance you can go back and add something really anything such as adding text to your completed videos saying "I really should have had gloves on while welding this"? As an Alabama boy I would have been slapped me bald for saying something like this to someone who is my elder, a master craftsmen or a master craftsman who is my elder. I understand you are not having the kind of interaction you were looking for when you posted links to your YouTube videos on IFI but there is no reason to be rude. I am not sure what you are looking for here but I don't think you will get it telling people what amounts to shut up.
  5. (In bad Yoda voice) When 329 years old, as good look, you will not. Looks like a supersize version of some tinsmith or sheet metal anvils. I got to agree with Daswuif, that is one good looking find.
  6. New Grill, new blower and new steel. It does not look like any of that was found on the side of the road, that is fancy. Good work on the document, that is very well done but remember once that blower tastes fingers it will always be a danger to fingers everywhere.
  7. I have read that some tanks even used balsa wood.
  8. He does have some good points but his hair hides them.
  9. Understood Sir! Littleblacksmith, striking is a good way to get out your stress, I do see the attraction.
  10. Nope, my nephew does not have a striker, hard for a 15 year old to fast talk his 15 year old classmates in to (gasp) putting down the game box to work outside.
  11. If that becomes an issue I figure we can add some boards to the bottom to make it a bit higher. I had always thought that knuckle height was a starting benchmark. Either way it will not be to big of a deal to elevate it if need be. Thanks for the input Ernest
  12. I had not thought about the trip hazard and that is strange since I am always getting on people about them at home and work. I was SOOOO nice to not have to lug/drag it in to place at my brother's house. I will see about the parts that are sticking out. The way we did the height was by having my nephew stand with his arm hanging limp for a knuckle to anvil check. Thanks for the input Ernest This is what it looked like before we built the stand.
  13. Neat, I will need to try that one day. Ernest.
  14. From the song Amish Paradise by "Weird Al" Yankovic Think you're really righteous? Think you're pure in heart? Well, I know I'm a million times as humble as thou art!
  15. My Nephew and I wanted to get a stand for his forklift tine anvil and with the exception of some Simpson Strong Tie straps and braces we were able to put it together using stuff I had on hand. The handle to move it will be taken off once we have the anvil in place but I am VERY happy not to have to try and drag that thing around. Man this thing is HEAVY!!!!
  16. Is that why people put the dies on the diagonal, I was overthinking it. It is always funny when you see something that turns out to have a very simple answer.
  17. That has to be the funkiest (in a good way) thing I have seen in a very long time. I love that twist. So did you make cuts on one side then twist?
  18. If you want a "turn key" type solution you might want to check with http://www.waynecoeartistblacksmith.com/ and http://www.waynecoeartistblacksmith.com/uploads/Build_a_Gas_Forge.pdf. Send Mr. Coe a message (WayneCoeArtistBlacksmith) and he can offer you options to make a forge that will work and be safe to use.
  19. Frosty, Thanks for saving me the trouble. I thought just letting the clay turn to goo on its own and then mixing in everything else might work but seemed too easy. Thanks again Ernest
  20. Frosty, I got the wife a new blender/food processor and will be trying to use the old food processor to turn the cheapest cat litter around (that should be bentonite in to a powder. I have also seen people do it in an old blender. Sadly the old blender pitcher was broken so I cannot try that right away. I wonder about using the blender to make a bentonite slushy (for lack of a better word) and then letter the extra water seep out by straining the slurry out using an old t-shirt stretched over a bucket. I have read that once you use a blender for this the blades will look like Hagar the Horrible's sword. Biker, Please let us know if you how hot you think it gets. I would not mind know if you can get it up to forge welding heat. I wonder about putting another brick (not in the wall) on the floor so you cut the cubic inches down. I love the look of the thing. It has a "Temple of Doom" kind of aesthetic with the sliding door.
  21. Thank you Frosty for the information! I need to build a new one or re-build the old one to work with the reducer bell and yes it does sound like a rocket on a "B" grade SciFi movie.
  22. Good Evening All, Funny thing, making a "T" burner with a 1" pipe does not sound like that big of a burner until you see the flame coming out of it. I have some photos taken w/o the light on at 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30+/- PSI. I am using a .045 tip that is almost nose to the burner pipe end of the "T". I was trading messages with Frosty and I have achieved true wisdom because I know that I know, well, nothing. Please take a look at these and while I assume the lower PSI flames to be richer in Oxygen and the higher PSI to be richer in propane I know again that I got no idea. I am trying to get the feel for what is a good flame for forge welding since my nephew wants to do some pattern welding. Lets face it, what red blooded 15 year old boy would not want to make some steel they can etch and say "Yup, I done that".
  23. I did not figure on using water in the cabinet but I for my airborne dust collector. Now a DIY water cutter is an entirely different idea. Most DIY ideas I get rolling around in my head fall under rule #87. If the thought of something makes me giggle for longer than 15 seconds, I am to assume that I am not allowed to do it. Found on Skippy’s List: The 213 things Skippy is no longer allowed to do in the U.S. Army. Google this if you have never read it before. I have Army Majors that have sent this list out to their people for review. The dust collection idea is basically my ripping off the Rainbow Vacuum. Run the air with dust through water before it gets to the shop vac. That having been said I would still use a mask and keep the fan on to blow dust out of the garage. Can you let me know what respirator you would use? I need to get one that will also take filters for when I am welding or cutting just in case I run across any zinc. I don't see my self welding any galvanized but I am willing to bet none of the people bitten by snakes or stung by wasps, hornets or bees in 2017 got up that morning and had "go get bitten/stung" on their "to-do" list for that day. On that same note, I see a large number of people welding nuts to things as part of a fab project. Unless I am wrong the normal grade (not 5 or 8) are zinc plated. Would I be correct that welding a normal zinc plated nut is the same type of danger as welding galvanized just to a lesser degree?
