  1. Does the concrete help to deaden the ring along with the magnets? I am about to set up my forklift anvil and I have heard bells that don't ring that loud. Thanks
  2. Mustang Cat Rental Store - Houston Southwest   Address: 11726 S Garden St, Houston, TX 77071 Phone: (713) 228-7368
  3. A misinformed B mentally lacking C predatory D All of the above In some cases they are answer D.
  4. Donnie, What are your anvil's dimensions? That looks like the most relaxing place I have seen in months.
  5. All things remaining equal I bet that guy is on a number of people's "zombie apocalypse dream team". I wonder when that type of fan was first used and the reason I wonder this is something like an Archimedes screw seem like a simple thing now but before the 3rd century BC they largely unknown. You have to like the tongs, like epic chopsticks
  6. Bengriswold, What are the dimensions of the work surface? I am about to do the same with a 7"x2"x24" hunk o' forklift fork.
  7. Beatsy, I was looking at the Michigan CAT location (24800 Novi Rd, Novi, MI 48375) using Google earth and I see what may be one or more good prospects for a scrap bin. I went to my local CAT rental place and they were nice enough to give me 2 forks that weigh about 180# each. The rental side is always needing to change out the forks because try as they might not everyone can drive a forklift. Just a thought.
  8. Buzzkill, You are correct and I may have been a bit on the judgmental side.
  9. Here is another good one. This guy has photos posted show lots of tools and anvil in Talladega Al. I bet he charges a bunch more than $2.00 a pound. WANTED Anvil, Anvils, Vices, Forges, Any Blacksmith Tools. I'll pay $ 2.00 a pound or MORE for good ANVILS, TOP dollar paid for nice un-abused anvils. Any size , 5 lb. up to 800 lbs., Very Large Vices, Please call or text After 9:00 AM or Before 9:00 PM. Thanks
  10. Good Morning folks, There are some times when speaking to the younger folks when I pull out small facts to remind them that even with our modern age of connected technology some things remain the same. One example is that the screws (propellers) for a nuclear powered supercarrier are cast in much the same way as things were cast 2000 years ago. This video shows the casting of magnets along with the rest of the process to produce the finished product. The good thing about this video is you are shown the PPE required with this kind of operation.
  11. The tone of this guy was something else, I wonder if he ever has done internet searches on how much an anvil costs.
  12. At least he did not say he would pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.
  13. I see this CL post here in Huntsville Al and I think we all want a $2.00 a pound anvil. Got to give credit for having brass. I'm looking for a free anvil or one to buy.....I will pay $2.00 per pound or more for a really nice undamaged anvil...........
  14. I remember some TV show (maybe the Carol Burnett show) gag about how not to use a blow gun and that was rule #1. inhale BEFORE putting the blowgun to your mouth.
  15. My Father's house in Germany before WW II had a stove that burned coke. One day I told him how coke was produced and he was amazed. He had always thought it was mined like coal. Funny things people take for granted.
  16. I do have one of these blankets from HF so I might just give that a try. I used my "cut 50" for the first time today on 240 volts and I was impressed at how well it started an arc on steel that still had mill scale.
  17. John, I bet that same trick could be adapted to keep stick welding berries out of the way as well. I was thinking about using a sheet of thick leather or fiberglass blanket as a partition between me and the work. As a short term fix I have attached some leather to some old (heavy) leather shoes. My problem is that I have 14 EEE feet so finding the right boots under $100.00 can be a challenge.
  18. Frosty, The people that own the local welding shop also own a safety shoe shop right next door so I will check them out. Ernest
  19. John, I agree it sounds strange but I am not looking for hat+coat+tails+walking stick type of spats. Companies like J Tillman make what are basically leather sleeves (like when welding) for you shoes so a stick welding berry can't get stuck in your boot laces. I agree, you don't want to shop for what could be called "adult fun" stuff at work!!!!
  20. Can anyone recommend a good place for chaps or spats? thanks
  21. Water is always a good thing to bring. At one time Henry Winkler was invited to the White House. His father said: "Go and take cake." so if nothing else water and sweets seem to be a good fall back.
  22. Alex, I showed my wife your work and she loved it. The only reason I don't like chandeliers as much as the next guy is because I am 203 cm tall and they hurt! If you think the US has complex laws I can tell you the laws can be more or less complex depending on what state you live in. Your work is wonderful and I wish you success. Ernest.
  23. A stump is one of the go-to items for dishing.
  24. Custom may be stretching it, more like if they have a tree and you ask real nice (with cash) I bet they will cut to your requested size. Just like anything it is all in how you ask the question. I started with "I need a real big log to mount an anvil on" so he would know what I was looking for.
