  1. on the 25 of october i have a demo in a high visibility place (i didn't even ask for this one) but i have some problems i have never done a solo demo so i was wondering what tools / steel to bring and i need to find a way to fix my forge so what is the best way to go non electric whith a portaforge with pumphandle firepot and no blower
  2. just go to the landscape / rock yard place near by they almoast allways have the 2300 degree hard fire bricks in the large size for outdoor fire pits and stuff
  3. a huge pile of files some fire tongs and some other stuff followed me home from the flea market for $5 aswell as 250 lbs fo coal blacksmithing coal form BAM i will try and post pics of find when i can find the camera
  4. i nominate hammerkid and mbrothers because they are active members on IFI they are knoleagable on many diffrent topics yet understand that there is much left to learn. they both are both excited about the craft and they have come along way in a rather short time. and i greatly value their input it is a clearly a tough decision to be made here. mbrothers or hammer kid they are more deserving than i. so for the heck of it i dont nominate my self i will leave that up to some one else if they feel me worthy of it. but i will try and tell what i have accomplished scence i started smithing. i have been blacksmithing scence febuary 08 i was messing around with a rock hammer and campfire for a few years prior. scence febuary i have built a smithy have done 5 demos many of wich have been setup in an unusal way by me going to see a demo staying arround for a few hours and being asked to come back the next day to help with the demo) taught 3 classes 2 of wich were repeats one a wind chime with musical clefts and the other was aranged about the same as the demos was a knife makeing class with 5 pepole per class. heck my shop is still able to fit in a mediuem tool box even the anvil i do not nominate myself i leave that to some one else however i do nominate hammerkid and mbrothers
  5. there is a vearry high chance that it is galvinized so be cautious if white somke starts from rhe sides or bottom or it turns a weird yellow color turn it off and get away like realy away as far away as you would be if you herd the lines for a gasser hissing be safe and careful we will continue to enjoy your input sorry for the rant i have come accross to much powder coated steel that was galvinized
  6. ya know i am 16 but hammer kid, sabre or m brothers are much more deserving of this nomination and they are more active on the site than i

  8. thanks glen and covforge ill be shore to stop by and see him when i am there
  9. i will try and get to these places the national cathedral would be an interesting place to see
  10. i am not partial to spring steels (ie 4140, 5160) because they move well under the hammer and relitivey forgiveing of some heat and lack there of and for me are relitively good water quench steels car leaf spring can be 1045 5160 or some other thing the mill makes a just do not recomend most exotic steels untill you do a fair bit of forgeing (A-32 is not recomended if cooled wrong lots of flying sharp things its not fun) be safe happy forgeing
  11. if you ar really dead set on hot dipping the gate you could send it out because the whole peice has to be done at once or it will rust at the joints or jous go with the above mentioned solutions
  12. i am headed to the DC areia by way of 70 is there anay place of importance that i should stop and go to i am spending 3 days in willamsburg (yay for planning)
  13. ok i see i have the tweer made and the blower made sorta scary but it works (plywood epoxy plus some homemede brass bushings) but there was a bowl inside of the pan at one time is it required to have this bowl or is it optional would a flat bar bent in a circle do the same task that the bowl was ment to
  14. um rip stop nylon or canvas work well leather ai a pain and for canvas go to the local big box store (HD, lowes, wally world)and buy a canvas drop cloth
  15. i have un stuck all the workings but now i am wondering what would the firepot in a forge like this look like
  16. thanks for the reminder about cast i already knew that bit its still vearry helpful to br reminded of simple rules the corrosion was caused by a great genus who had bound the entire assembly together with bailing wire it became a giant rust glob witch felloff to dust what you see it the result of a few houre of picking and 36 hours soak how would i best remove a beheaded bolt from a cast bracket?
  17. i finaly have a portaforge but i ahve one problem left as to how to get the last peice un stuck pics of forge and mow the pic of the problem

  19. yay finaly a portable forge craigslist finaly came through and well as you can see it needs some work fore ut was bought in the late 1800's has no makers mark and has been sitting half burried in a yard for the past 40 years but mud is not a bad thing at all because it prevented serious rusting only one peice left to free up
