  1. i just keep it in a crucible near the fire so that it stays molten so i just put it on with a peice of twisted rebar it acts like a pen works fine
  2. i have been making these for the past while and thought it would post them for all to see typically the parents or people in leader ship of the council and ask me to make a knife for DESERVING eagle scouts I ALWAYS DO MY WORK THROUGH THE PARENTS so as not to cause any problems and the parents usually suggest the pattern of the knife and handle what finnish and if its sharp or blunt so the knife turns out they they think it should look the pictures are of knives still in progress due for a may 3rd eagle ceremony most of the knives are made free of charge the only exception is material costs on really expensive things only such as the gold plated display knife i invite you to have a go at it you would be surprised at how rewarding it is now all thats left is to get eagle myself
  3. thanks for all of your help everyone how much do you think the anvil is worth
  4. i have been messing around with thermite seince i was 9 and its a really bad idea in general but if you must my recipe is 2/3 alum powder (go out and buy a new coffee grinder pack is with alm foil flakes and run it for 30 min DONT USE FOR FOOD EVER AGAIN! bad stuff happens) 1/3 black iron oxide not red (FeO) {scale} [same method for grindeing as before] be careful
  5. i have tried and tride with craigslist for a few years and finaly an anvil has bean located and there asckin $400 i can proly work the price down if need be of if its a steel ill just go with it "the anvil measures 26" from tip of horn to the other end, so much rust hard to make out logo call for more details if interested, just estimating about120#" please let me know any info you can derive from theese photos
  6. thats more than a little rust glen but not to hard to clean up
  7. i was wondering if it would be possible to cast aluminum around the tang of a knife in a rough shape and file it down to the right shape i know i would have to preheat the blade and was wondering about hopw much the shrinkage would be on the aluminiuem compaired to the steel(S7)
  8. thanks for the advice thomas but i just dont want to mess around with them at the currant time to dangerous (too many epa pepole running around fineing pepole for everything and if they found that they would have a big pay check at my expence)
  9. the best trick i have found for work hardening is a small hand held sander suchas the mighty mouse with a non abbrasive pad and some pariffin wax on the pad go evenly over the surface the vibrations will harden it up with about 20 min of work
  10. better than my first try and i am 15 have fun and keep it a healthy addiction
  11. giger counter goer wild and you just dont want an anvil that came out of a cold war era munitions factory that has sence bean buried in a superfund they have bean sealed up for 10000 years but some of the anvils skipped the burial you dont want one
  12. they dont glow saddly and they are really tempting 450# 5$ untill you know there radioactive i hope no one buys one of these things ever in the next oh say 10'000 years
  13. 4 years with it is alittle to long but i am reluctant to buy the only local anvils due to the fact that they are all munitions factory surplus giger counter goes wild in the same room as them thus i am left searching
  14. i see you have tried to jump in way over your head you really should try and master the basics as rich said and in a few years your secuss rate will rise dramaticly practice makes better practice
  15. this is my 15# HF and it might be better suited for a door stop it now weighs 9# after the feet left it but it has lasted for 4 years i proly need a new anvil but it shure is an upgrade from a rock
  16. my 15#HF anvil that has lost ist feet after 4 years soon after he 3 pounder showed up the 8 pounder is usualy a nother anvil
  17. thwe have mystery steel thats hard to find out what it is. and they have mystery dimensions and a tape measure i think those with mystery steel probly got it a little worse than again they cant just weld on more wood
  18. it was and it did not burn too well just melted and plugged up all sorts of things the tweer and such and threw bits of molten metal all over the place it was a al/mg alloy but it was very stupid
  19. what ever it was it was stupid and made a really big mess it was broken up bits of aluminuem ingots (or at least that was what they were marked)
