Greetings Yesteryear, Slick design and well executed... What do you plan on cooking on that spit ? Do you use an adjustable trammel or select fit length? Last question .. When is dinner? Carry on Jim
-
Greetings Harris, You will have to answer a lot of questions before anyone can help you. 1. What kind of final product do you plan . Small.... large... leaves flowers gates railings fireplace ect ect.. ?? 2. The age old question.. How much money do you want to spend? 3. Shop space.. ? 4. Your level of blacksmithing experience ? 5 Does the equipment require an air compressor ? The questions go on and on and on.. I think if I had only 2 pieces of equipment and had to choose it would be a treadle hammer and a flypress. As you might expect I have more then one of each and power hammers and presses.. I hope this helps and expect a lot more questions form the guys Jim

Jim Coke replied to Larry H's topic in Building, Designing a Shop
Greetings Larry... Sweet shop.. What's retired?... Now the real work begins..... I see you live in NY.. How are you going to heat the building ? No smoke stacks for the forges ? I love the doors ... Lots of room to bring in the power hammers... When is your first demo ? I wish you well Jim -
SUN in my welding helmet
Jim Coke replied to ironwolfforgeca's topic in Welding/Fab General Discussion
Greetings Ironwolf, You might try the insides of an old motorcycle helmet... The pads fit close to you face and could be arranged so that you could lift your helmet.. You should have enough ventilation through the bottom... It's an idea... Good luck Jim -
Steel selection - punches,drifts,chisels
Jim Coke replied to Eddie Mullins's topic in Slitters, Punches, Drifts, etc
Greetings Eddie, I have found a few dealers on Ebay that have very fair prices on H 13 , 4140 , and S7.. Why spend all day messing with junk yards to find unknown steel.. I just finished some for my small in town shop that I made from H13 and 4140.. One thing if you want springs and axles is to go to the local truck and auto repair shops an give the a heads up on what you are looking for.. Most of the time that sort of thing goes in the dumpster.. I wish you well.......Jim -
Macbruce, Your a lucky man... Pretty mum....Trout for dinner.... And living in a gorgeous area. Can you make flys on you power hammer ? Have a great day.... Jim
-
Greetings Gundog, Nice work... Why don't you spot weld the joints and try to make the collars.. Come on its not hard... We all challenge ourselves that's how we learn.. The only problem area I see is at the top wall mount ... That one you will have to weld and leave it exposed unless your bracket covers both scrolls.. Keep up the great work.. No more BBQ for you... Have a great day Jim

Greetings Cleetis. How do you sleep nights ?... Of course I would not buy It because it was dusty... How do you keep a straight face ? Keep being lucky Jim
-
Greetings Curly, Rock solid work so to speak.... I love your twist... Keep forging Jim
-
Greetings Eric. Early English for sure... Judging by the big letters it may be a Parker... Jim
-
Greetings Fatfudd, Judging by what I see . Because of the short screw and the ball design it was most likely used for a production line like the silver industry... I wonder what the screw holes are in the back of the C frame... Its possible it was used in the leather industry.. I would research old leather machines... I hope this helps Jim

Anvils at the Nebraska State Capitol
Jim Coke replied to SilverDeck's topic in Anvils, Swage Blocks, and Mandrels
Greetings Copilot, Thanx for sharing... Its cool.... I wonder why all the anvils look like Vulcans..... The one with the horn near his horn is a little touchy but he has a striker available with a large knife for surgery. Thanx again Jim -
Greetings Nor, Proceed with caution... The seller says the thing that covers the threads has a crack... and the tin covers that... ( the nut ) It has the wrong spring and the mount is not correct for a Columbian . I would like to see this one in person first.. And don't forget the shipping... In my terms cost prohibited ... Good luck and be patient.. Jim

Greetings again Knots, The main thing is to use a 7 vice grip.. If you make one you will find they work for treadle hammer chisels and for hot work in the vise ... Once you use one it will be your go to holder. As you might expect I have about 7... Lazy I guess .. Many chisels for treadle hammer work. When I can I will answer your other questions on the message board... Jim
-
Macbruce, The leather hold the chisel secure with that style vice grip. Try one you"l like it ... By the way if you look in the tool box an example of the wedge style hold down we discussed for you power hammer dies... Your a cool old dude
-
Greetings Macbruce and others, Yep the bee is a bad motor scooter... It's complicated how it works. My last commission before retiring was a surround for a large support for a home that they had to cut and put jacks in.. The did not allow for wood shrinkage... Big home on a river and he was into trout fishing. Not bad for an old guy Want a challenge try repousse and chase on the round
-
Greetings Knots, I posted it in holder for short punches..... Its simple a rough leather strap 1in with a 7 vice grip try it you'll like it....
-
Greetings Red, Open the doors and we will all drink to your beautiful art... I love the set down weave. Great work... Keep forging Jim
-
Greetings Ciladog The table is mounted internally on two cylinders... It adjust 8in to desired height... The foot peddle controls hammer intensity and 1/2 in of height. Which compensates for work clearance... Nope not a zipmax... Its a bumblebee .... And for holding chisel I use the system I posted on holders a few days ago. Jim

A little help with this anvil, please???
Jim Coke replied to Zanshin's topic in Anvils, Swage Blocks, and Mandrels
Greetings Zan, Sure looks like a Trenton With an x BUT the Trentons with an X were built in the 30s and would have a belt line weld with a complete tool steel top. If you had a closer picture of the logo it would help... I'll bet its a Trenton import ... It looks skinny at the waist.. Jim -
Frosty, My design.. I call it the bumblebee. Hence the color. You can tell by the tooling that I can form many things . Multi media stands .. I hate pitch... And yes its slick for planishing. Jim

Greetings again Ironman, I not only do contracts but I solve small light problems too.... Put a small part of an old light fixture in you work and call it a restoration... You can buy an old lamp at a flea market and its legal... You can take that to a lamp shop and have them wire it and save the receipts... Problem solved.... Good luck Jim
