FREE COAL!!! How big to smash it?
I prefer nut size coal ( up to the size of a green walnut ) as that is what I started out with. A lot of smiths prefer stoker or pea size coal. If you start off with nut size and manage your fire properly you will be using stoker or pea size as you add coal around the edges and it breaks down during the working of the fire.

Steel thickness for fire ring?
Mine is 10 gage ( approx 1/8 ) 304 stainless steel with anvil shaped cut outs around its perimeter ( approx 4 ft in dia. ) and about 8 inches deep.

I can make tongs I also can make hambugers But I usually go to McDonalds and buy one. OCP Tom tongs Billy tongs All are made far better than anything ive ever done. I have several tongs made by some of the best smiths out there,and as good as they are ,they are not as good as the Tom tongs etc. - trade secrets
