  1. Sorry Bob this old Conn Yankee just has to ask. Is this rocket work, nascar, avaiton, structual iron? We are talking about holding the pieces of a fire pot together. Have seen one gas welded with coat hangers. Burned thru before the weld gave out. I don't see any issue with 60k over 70k. Course I run a gasser perhaps a coal forge develops more stress. Grin. Ken.
  2. Jer, those guys are in the center of the state. Brasstown is over by the Tenn Ga corner. 6 hrs or better. Ken.
  3. Just my story, Worked for a major aircraft repairer. 2nd shift guy did 2 pieces a week with a 50% failure rate. I did 1 piece a day and rewelded his 50% failures. He got my wages reduced 30% cause he was senior. (I got NO rejects + fixing his *******) ( both members of the same union) Few yrs later sent a crew from a FL shop north to start up a new military contract. Came back saying waited 2 hrs for a union guy to open the doors, 2 hrs for a union guy to move a fork lift(keys in it) 2 more hrs for a electrican to plug in the welder. By the way the union guys were getting 4 or 5 times what we were getting. We were profitable they were not. Guess who closed. Unions are great if your a union boss. Yeh go on strike for 6 mos to gain $ .50 an hr. How much did ya lose over the 6 mos? How much did your dues go up? Sorry guys if I do X in 30 mins I want 30 mins pay not 20 mins with 10 nins going to a Hoffa. Ken.
  4. Just a thought, My shop is rough sawn pine with spray foam insulation in the walls and roof(4 inchs thick} Stays cool or warm and is fire resistant. Do it in the spring its cheaper. Whole shop is paneled inside. Ken.
  5. Thomas , How many anvils have a 3 digit # on each side? As far as I can find only H-B used the #s oppsite the logo Tool steel batch #. I have a 142 lb marked like that. Ken.
  6. Late model Hay Budden. Solid tool steel from the waist up. Probably 250 lbs + - As for price $3.00 or less is GREAT. Ken.
  7. Hey Sam, That is what I offered coopers band setter.
  8. Heres my 2 cents worth, Will a great anvil make ya a better smith? I know it will not not. Watched a guy in my gun club. Started with a $200 pistol. couldnt hit squat. bought a $300 then a $400 and a $500 still couldn't hit squat. Went all the way to a coustom $1800 piece. Still can't hit squat. Its NOT the tool it's what you do with it. Met a local guy who went to Charlston to Phillips smithy. Asked who belonged to that crappy old anvil. Response was I do. If ya really want to be humbled walk around Charlston then look at Phillips shop all that ironwork was done there. Ken.
  9. One of the best cast russians harbor freight ever had. Later ones had the diagonal hardy(were the crappy ones) Ken.
  10. 300lb bubba swinging a 12 lb hammer on cold iron comes to mind Bob. We old yankees know better. Ken.
  11. Yes 3rd model HB has the solid tool steel top(from the waist up horn and all is one piece of tool steel) I have a 142lb smiths anvil same vintage. Great find. Ken.
  12. Keith, keeping your head down is good keeping your butt down also rates very high. The bad guys don't care if your a contractor/medic/clergy or ground troop. Packing may be against the rules but do it if ya can. An old jarhead told ya. Ken.
  13. That ain't as bad as the one at my local flea market. 8 times this yr. It's a 30lb vulcan that could double as a 20lb fuller. No edges at all. asking $120 firm Sez "I know what its worth" Ken.
  14. I don't think PW put dates on them. Pics of the logo and face will help date it. Ken.
  15. Come on Jer, if we bring one it's ours If sent she's yours. Deb would do more damage than the birch. Ken. Sorry about your friend. My rescued female was diagonesed with a tumor on Mon. Some time your the windsheild some times ya the bug. Hug the goats and pet the better half. Or vice a versa. Ken.
  16. Just my 2 cents. It don't matter how many or how big the tools are. If ya got what ya need and what ya know how to use um. Thats all ya need, If ya can cut it out with a OA torch do ya or can ya cut it out with a plasma table? I have a table CNC but that gal across the pond can out do me any day by hand. Learn to use what ya got and can afford. Yeh I suffer from bigger and better thoughts too. Do I need an anvil bigger than 194 lb proably not. Would I grab a 250 lb probably so. Biggest thing is use and be happy with what ya got. It's not what ya got it's how ya use it. Ken.
  17. Ross Meehan was the name of a foundry in Chattanoga Tenn. Now a tailgate market Ken.
  18. Here is a thought for ya. there a lot of us old shooters would like to see twist barrels for modern powders. The mfg's woun't touch it. Any one here got the insurance to make them for sale? Should we use 1800S Tires on a 2000s roadster? I live by the rule. "Just cause ya can don't mean ya should" Ken.
  19. It's not the twist or the rust or corrosion. Quite simply Old damask twist barrels were made for black powder Not modern propelants. Question is can ya forge weld that spiral strip at 110%. Had a school mate in the 60s Determined to break 5,000 fps with his daddys 220 swift. Left hand has 2 fingers and 1/2 a thumb. If ya build one use a looong pull string to touch it off. Ken.
  20. Darn, Do this mean I need to park the gasser and finish the clinker maker so I can surface my driveway? Ken.
  21. Come on francis, It just needs a little or a big Myakka hog. I prefered the little ones. Ken.
  22. 2 Very sharp points of light here. It was free so don't sweat hurting it. If ya strip it and it falls apart Just gorrilla glue it back and use it in mommas garden. Ken.
  23. Igor ya need to hang on to both of them for the boys. Ken.
