Junkyard steel finds
Yeh I like that place too. Be careful with round stock. Local shaft maker leaves 6-12 in drops 1-2 in dia. work hardens in my saw. cuts less than a 1/4 inch wipes out a bi metalic blade with coolant. Burns drills inna heart beat. 25 lbs went back. Ken

Reducing thickness
My guess is making a blade(bevel) I would forge it then grind/file it. Ken.

Vise questions
Sam if ya don't need a vintage look. Pick up a 4 in non swivel bench vise weld a plate on the bottom locate a hardy post so the handle clears the heel. I put 1/4 in ears on 3 sides to take up any wobble. Have a 4 1/2 in post vise with a broken leg may adapy that one also. Ken.

Century Welder
Have to disagree with 220 is 220. My tig/stick miller Will Not run on a dryer service. It takes a 100 amp line. My mig takes a 50 amp line. Also is it single or 3 phase power. Best to talk to a sparky. Had a big box guy tell me I could run the miller on 16ga wire. If ya don't know what you are doing get help. Working with 1 in sq buss lines 460 volt will make a beliver of you. Ken.

Managing in the heat
Something else I learned back in the OLD CORPS. Parris island in the 60s. Before stress cards. SALT TABLETS. 105 on the grinder. Water don't help. If your t shirt is white(I wear black) ya need salt not water. This was in the day they ran ya till ya dropped. Sounds nasty but if your peeing yellow ya need SALT. Or a shop with AC Ken.

anvil tattoo
Son I thought ya knew it's swaybacked and I can't weld it flat for ya. Well I probably could but that might smart a bit. LOL Ken.

Vice grips/Mole wrenches
Just a few cents more. If they are good and tight they are great if not they ain't worth crap. I have both. Lock um with one hand. Need 2 hands and a screwdriver to unlock. Other ones(mid size) feel like they lock then pop open. Even with tong rings(or locks) had stuff slip out. Never with the good vise grips. I found if ya buy um at the flea market or yard sales they are there cause they are worn out. Have 10 welding clamps. 2 sheet metal clamps 5 pliers. Can't do fab work without um. Ken.

Finally... A "real" anvil!
Might try a carriage bolt in the pritchel hole. Slip fit about a 5 incher. Pop it out to draw a crowd pop it in and it gets quieter. Works on both my H-Bs. Ken.

Century Welder
Standard input cables are fine. Really long leads to be bigger. My 460 amp miller stick/tig runs on 100 amp input. The 250 amp esab mig runs on 50 amps. That is wide open. Ken

Century Welder
I have always found the oppsite. Welding leads are far better conductors than extension cords. Another factor is can ya drag the welder a 100+ feet? Much easier to drag the leads. Ken.
-
New 50kg(110#) cast steel anvil
Looks like the stand is hollow. That plus the arched base is adding to the ring. If the base is hollow ya may try filling with sand. Ken.

Found a free anvil
Really? I knew it would take off rust or plating. Paint is pretty much nonconductive. I would vote for stripper(no lead dust flying around. Proper disposal and clean up of course. Ken.

New benchmarks in ridiculous

Shotpeening an Anvil?
Everything I have ever seen that was shot peined left the surface with a zillion tiny dents. Now we take a flap wheel and smooth it out. Ya may have just sanded off the micro thin hard surface. Soften up your hammer(hit where ya aim)or plate it. Ken.
