I get good results with P-nut oil. I get the metal to a dull red heat and quench. Be careful, it will flare up. I have also used clear spray on polyurethane The hotter the metal, the darker the finish. Please post some pics. We would like to see how things work out.

I finally got around to taking a picture of my touchmark. I had three sizes made. 5/16 wide, 7/16 wide and 5/8 wide.
It's just my initials inside an oval. Not very imaginative, I know, but it's mine.

Thanks. It actually looks darker in this pic than it is. I cleaned it real good with a wire brush on a side grinder, got it good & hot & sprayed it with a clear poly urethane finish.

This is a sign post I made for a nephew in Alabama. He had the sign made and I made the post, vines, flowers etc. It is at the entrance to a memorial garden for those who have lost infants.
