  1. Welcome JR, Yes we love to see photos and it does not matter good ,bad or ugly. this is how this community helps each other over a long distance by advising and helping each other with their work .Many here have some medical issues Myself included that may keep us from forging everyday However, it does not stop us from doing what we love . I salute you for your ambition and abilities I look forward to seeing your work . Sam
  2. Cool thank you for the post . Sam
  3. Unless I just read over it and missed it you Need /Should Tack it together First and get the Main body set before welding any weld completely ! it is one of the most looked over things in welding and that is Tacking the project together and squaring things up before you weld any of it solid . Sam
  4. I did some editing on it. Sam
  5. A nice pad of Vulcanized rubber under quietens it down very nicely and the neighbors will not hate you. Sam
  6. Post a photo of it , if it is at a good price get it if you can afford better get it I always say get best you can buy with in your budget and make what you need . Sam
  7. Just because you can make it in a CAD program does NOT mean you can forge it . Many Smiths here can draw about anything with a pen /pencils and or paint it in full details of a project . That does not do a bit of good if the smith is a Newbie and has absolutely no smithing capability of making anything . This is a complex design and a bit over weight, I hope you change your mind and look for a lighter material. Good luck with your endeavors. Sam
  8. Welcome to IFI ,I look forward to seeing your work . Sam

  12. Old Rascal, a simple answer to your question; is No you do not need a fire pot ! However, with that nice of a forge you have, and as stated above I would line it with sand, clay, cat litter, brick, or something to help protect the cast iron table as well as keep it from cracking when it starts to cool down . Sam
  13. Welcome to IFI the only one to to convince is your self . Sam

  21. For a Blade I am Making for "Boomer" my Brother that just Passed away. Dad is a Retired SSG from the US Army and has made a request of me to make a Knife in Honor of his service in the Military and for him . I am Not ashamed I will Seek help from my fellow Members here to help me with this project, I can carve in Bone very well as well as Fit and Finish. However, I will be seeking help to pull this off to Honor my brother as well my Mom and Dad to make a blade and Sheath worthy of the Honor of my brother's Service in the Military and his Very Young Life. As this project comes together I will let you know more I hope to get things rolling very soon depending on the Help I can get with it . His Unit is going to have a Memorial Stone placed at the unit location here in the next month or so I hope to have it completed before /By then . I have a 1 1/4 Thick X1 1/4 Thick X 8 inch Billet made .(If Needed it will need to be Hammered into a Usable Billet/Blade) Use is Not required. I am looking to make a Bowie style Coffin Handle. So the blade can be engraved with Boomers full name, Military Service Emblem, and Dates If there a few Bladesmiths (Junior smiths, M.S.,Welcome) Leather Sheath Makers, and Engravers that can help me out please post here & /or pm me as to what you can do to help me out . Thank you and Best Regards Sam Gold Smithy = for meteorite pieces ½ in in size
  22. Riff, As much as I like the reference to the Show I am 42 and have had the Name "Samuel Cro" for all my life long before the show However I do like the show just not the confusion with me <Grins> it is an Awesome book and shows you that you do Not need a big shop or fancy equipment to make a simple ,usable, quality knife . However , you will soon learn nice equipment is very good and will lead to your success to making high quality knives Much easier and the EQ will save a ton of time . Sam
  23. CD, The term spring steel refers to a group of medium-to-high carbon, low alloy steel products which exhibit excellent yield strength. The term yield strength refers to a material's ability to endure significant bending or twisting and return to its original shape without deforming. Spring steel stock alloys typically include silicone in their composition and are hardened and cold rolled after casting to improve yield strength. Spring steel products are generally either cold drawn as wire or punched from flat stock. Typical uses include saw blades, tape measures, helical springs, and vehicle suspension elements. Spring steel alloys feature the unique characteristic of being able to withstand considerable twisting or bending forces without any distortion. Products made from these steel alloys can be bent, compressed, extended, or twisted continuously, and they will return to their original shape without suffering any deformation. This characteristic is defined as a high yield strength and is the result of the specific composition and hardening of the steel alloy. Spring steels are medium-to-high carbon content alloys generally featuring a carbon content of 0.5 to 1.0 percent. The other alloy additives typically include manganese and silicone with silicone being the key component in high yield strengths. So YES Spring Steel Is a Good Blade material and a addition of wrought iron would make a significant showing in the patten in pattern welded steel (AKA Damascus) However you failed to identified the type of Spring steel you intend to use ... IE Leaf spring , Ultra High Carbon Spring Steel , or Such So with out knowing what you are specifically speaking of it is hard to give you the correct response . Samuel
  24. It is Known as Rust Bluing : http://theshootersroost.com/rust-bluing/ and the Best there is : http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/metal-prep-coloring/metal-bluing/specialty-bluing-chemicals/classic-rust-blue-prod22820.aspx you really need to do your research once again your lack of willingness to do simple reading behooves me to really despise helping you in any projects you post here on IFI and by the way where is the Fictional sword you were to make after everyone posted that you would have major issues making it ? Yes I remember it very well and your arrogance to the help and information many "Elders" posted to you and your lack of respect for said Smiths as well . Good Luck Young Man and Best regards Samuel Cro
