The what for the who now?
-
I just think it'd be cool to have. Possibly use it to punch holes in thin leather
-
So whats it worth as it sets? I think its pretty darn cool looking if nothing else.

http://www.millerauctions.net/images/DSC_0124_426x640_.jpg. I think its a punch of some sort, but it may also be a watch jewel setter.

I dissassembled my 400. I took off the grease/oil cap at the end of the main shaft, put the longest ratchet on it possible and cranked down until I pulled the whole bottom worm gear out. I loosened the gears up, took the nut of the shaft exposing the bearing, and twisted it through. If I recall correctly, there should be either a hex key or screw infront of or behind the blade with a weight/ spot on it. It may be different depending on when it was made.

Thats pretty cool. If all else, go to a local machinery repair shop. I got 25+ files from one. They weren't usable as files, but for free (or trade) you can get alot of good steel
-
That by absolute far is one of the most inpirational forged items I've ever seen
-
I never ever thought of using tooling for my power hammer to make tongs... Now I may just make what I need for tongs, and make tongs to sell. Heck I just need to get back at the forge and finish what I had started in Fall
-
I figured 3 of them are high carbon and 1 may be wrought from the way its pitted. I'm looking into making a nice set of punches out of the spindles and a little upsetting of the square stock to make a hardy tool, and possibly a square drift

Tiny, or Fred. I've spent $40 to buy food for myslef in a day. I'd go hungry if I found a hammer for that
-
The Trenton 155 went for $425. Thre had a HUGE post vice behind the cabinet that, "isn't for sale". I'll try my best to get it. It was an Indian Chief (Indian something to tired to remember). Next time I see the auctioneer I'll try to buy it

What are buggy axles? I bought 4 of them for $10.00 today. Buying them was cheaper than buying barstock so I figured for $2.50 each I had nothing to lose. One old timer told me that they are some sort of low carbon steel. Was he right?
-
$2.50 a pound average is what I'll go with

I took a good look at the anvil today. Its a Trenton. Inbetween the front feet its stamped, "155---- 198-- A". - Unlegible or possible space. We guesstemated the weight around 150-160. (What its stamped) Its in A condition. Worn edge and one perfect edge. Horns fairly worn, cutting tables got chisel marks, hardy and pritchel are in great shape. What would yall value it at? I'm guessing in the $400 range. Would that be a good price?

Thats genius.... And the auctions comeing up to boot.... Good source for steel and random useful objects.. I'm going to the auction for a dutch oven(But the anvil and other things would look mighty nice next to my forge when its done)
-
Those are expensive.... I'd rather weld up my own out of stuff laying around. Is theri even a difference inbetween the way a rectangular fire pot burns to a circular one?
-
Do they make high carbon re-bar? I for see a great interest in these in the near future

I bought a forge table, Lancaster 40 Blower (works perfectly bit small for my needs), Delta 5 inch Disc and 30 inch belt combo, and an old Sears and Roebuck 4 by 36 with 8 inch disc for $90 last year. The table has a dutch oven lid as a fire pot (I used some kiln cement to make it a tiny bit deeper), with a normal tuyere attatchment. The thing is, it takes a round fire pot, and I don't know where to get a round firepot. The table weight 140+/-. It was originally a pump-action forge. It has a raised lip around the hole for the firepot. What brand might it be? I chipped out the cement and am mentally designing an octagonal fire pot. What problems might an octagonal firepot create? I have a 2 1/2 by 4 foot peice of 1/2 inch plate to make a fire pot with.

Left Handed, or using the Right side of your Brain
Hayden H replied to rthibeau's topic in Blacksmithing, General Discussion
I started out as a lefty, up until recently I could write decently with my left hand, but I found cursive written right-handed with a left handed slant to be much quicker than left-handed danelian -
This sounds a little over complicated. (To me atleast.) I had the same problem with a big forge going out quickly, So i got a 2 inch cast iron T and 2 elbows, (Free from a mentor) plumbed a medium sized electric blower fan, (free also, found 10+ while cleaning shop) to it, the electric always blows, so when I stop cranking the blower theirs just enough air supply so keep the fire alive

I agree with the prior posts. I've handled a pair of spurs with solid silver swastikas on them. The maker died in the mid 30's just a graphic then, now it is in effect the mark of the beast

Can you tell what brand it is?

If I can come up with the money, I'll buy it. I'd just like a large anvil. I've got a Kohlswa 75 and a Fulton (Made by either Hay Budden or Fisher. More than likely a Hay Budden). I know someone looking for an anvil so I wouldn't mind selling that Kohlswa for $300. (Its got some edge damage, the rest is pristine flat and true with no welding or repairing. )
