  1. I've only dreamed about it. Lots of people here have, search for blooms and smelting on here and as is often said get a drink and pack a lunch... :) might be a while
  2. Thanks Mark, had a feeling he might be on here
  3. I was looking for some info on anvils and came across this Facebook page. Black Dog Forge Blacksmith Shop, A lot of beautiful pictures of assorted things.
  4. I'm sure someone else will chime in, but being a Japanese bladesmith I suspect he's working with a wet hammer and anvil to blow the scale off the piece he is forging.
  5. Had two knives to polish up. Shop was getting cold and was running out of patience so I grabbed the die grinder and a scotch bright buffing wheel. Boy oh boy did it work quick and polish things up nice. Cleaned all the 50 grit belt sander marks right out in no time. The few deeper scratches where less than the 180 grit sand paper was leaving before. Took very little with the 320 grit to make things look perty. May well worth a try for someone else...
  6. Nothing much in my stocking, Fontanini anvil was a little to heavy for Santa to ship I guess. But my wife is super pleased. found a cheap wire basket and made a handle for it. She'd been looking for an egg basket all summer :) as a bonus all the hens have laid an egg so fresh toads in the holes for breakfast.
  7. A friend found this hinge on the net someplace. Have a pail or to of shoes recued from the scrap bin, going to have to give it a try real soon
  8. Sweet Score! Just might be enough to put you on the naughty list to get that extra coal in the stocking :)
  9. would they have heated just the cutting edge w/ a torch hardened/tempered on the aluminum handled knives?
  10. I wonder how much better the new tractor would fair if it had some lift while it was pulling. the old steam model had the chain hooked up far higher than what was on the JD. I remember from horse logging, you hooked as short as you could to get as much lift on the front of the log to make it easier for the horses to pull. bet any money that the JD was really light on the rear axle
  11. Any commercial truck places nearby, look for mudflap or cheater springs(top half of a bunk that folds down) in a logging truck. looks very close to a cheater spring.
  12. Thanks for the ideas guys. How would you go about a finger guard on a design like this Rich, or is it even possible?
  13. I've made a few more knives similar to this one. The one has been field tested, been through 2 deer and an elk and still hair spitting sharp so the owner tells me. Super happy with it. Only issue is the handle gets a bit slippery and he tends to slide up onto the blade a little when skinning with it. Really like the flow the shape has, and it's such a nice feel in the hand. was thinking maybe put a bunch of file marks across the handle. Was kinda wondering if anyone had any thoughts on other ways to rectify the situation?
  14. Could always do a ring test on it and see how sound it is, doesn't really help with what speeds it may be designed to run at. Or how you might set it up on something. I've seen something similar someplace before but couldn't begin to tell you what the machine it mounts to might look like. Rather cool find just the same.
  15. http://www.homehardware.ca/en/rec/index.htm/Heating-Ventilation-Cooling-Home-Comfort/Heating/Stove-Fireplace-Supp/Blowers-Fans/Blower-for-Flame-and-Drolet-Wood-Stoves/_/N-ntima/R-I5531775 just saw this fan at Home Hardware for whatever it's worth

I really like all of them! but the hammer is especially neat. how did you you go about it?
  18. Does anyone know what the difference in the jets is between kerosene and gas? Kinda curious
  19. Simple elegance love it. Really going to have to steal that idea.
  20. I turned my own race in mine and it seems to be working fine. '?do=embed' frameborder='0' data-embedContent>> heres the link to my thread from before. hope it helps
  21. little scrap of 5160 beat to shape ... managed to nail the heat treat. hardened up something beautiful. have to build a better belt grinder one day soon. make the transitions a little easier to do.
  22. Managed to get control of the remote and was watching Lost Treasures, think it was. Anyways was about the Staffordshire horde. Very cool bit of history and a wicked looking seax was made part way in... kinda made my night.
  23. works been stupid busy, barely keep the logging trucks on the road right now... maybe if I have a weekend I can finish it up and get some pics up
  24. Needs a few finishing touches. Sharpened all of the neighbours knives in about 10 minutes. Had thought about a seat, really don't need one. Gr. Grandpas grinder is over in Dads shop. Its a 2 pedal affair, strapping frame and a old steel seat. Actually have to work a little to keep that one going round. The stones heavy enough on my grinder to need very little effort to keep it moving. wil try to get some picks up soon
