heres a few more pics as promised. lighting just isn't playing nice in my shop. hoop for a foot pedal bung off a barrel for a sand drain in the post probably can't see it very well but the plate that slides up and down on the mast is H shaped tabs on the back are small so that's why there will be height lock bolts

Hammer should be right around 30lbs, 2x2"x3' Arms are 24" if I remember right. As for changes I haven't really had a chance to play much with it yet. work just keeps getting in the way now

Played with some horse shoes welded up 2 wreaths and made a pair of hinges. Attempted to make a nice symmetrical heart for my wife. They are far more difficult to make than one would think. been a good long weekend lots of shop time :D

I'll try to get out there a little later and take some better pics. It hits plenty hard. More is lost due to it not being bolted to the floor. The anvil rattles around on the pipe post so it needs some sort of attachment. The black rubber bungee seems to rob more energy than anything else its old rubber. When things thaw out I can get into the sand heap and fill the post up which will help things to.

Still need a few things twiddled around on it but you can stomp on a pedal and the hammer hits the anvil. Can't ask for much more than that right now. Need just a little more spring, takes a bungee to give that little extra assist. have to dig around for a few bits as I would like to put in some angled bracing between the mast and the base. A few holes to drill to clamp it at whatever height I want to set it to. but yeah its basically built and used it to stamp my mark into two knives. Think its gonna be fun!

Busy busy... much cutting and welding. will have to find a better spring than I have but thinking I can make it work if connected in the right spots. Just need a few holes drilled for locking the height and a foot pedal and linkages to go with. A little more grinding on my anvil face is needed as it isn't flat to the hammer face. Feels like a day well spent. Maybe just maybe...I might have something usable sometime tomorrow

And My first thought was, 'Now that's going to be a doozy of a forge... might take a bit to insulate though' :)

some where on IFI there is a thread on new anvils. only ones that isn't so easy to find info on are Renato Muskovic's anvils. Rathole Forge with the Fontanini, Nimbas , refflinghaus lots out there... google is your friend, and lots of reviews here on IFI

Been a busy day. Off to moms and raided Dads scrap piles. I now have most everything I need for a treadle hammer. Welded my uncles muffler back up on the way home and mostly fixed the wifes van. The heater hoses to the rear are ugly ugly to change on a caravan. Then some more material prep for my treadle. Not 100% on my linkages yet. Not sure whether one piece of 1/2x2x24" strapping is enough or if it should be doubled up. Have a really nice post for the anvil to mount to thanks to Dads old reciprocating cut off saw. The anvils a stub shaft for a Cat 527 skid cat track frame pivots on it. Must be in the neighbourhood of 75lbs. Sitting in the corner is a power hammer that dad had acquired, one day when the weather is warm I'll disappear it if I can make enough room in my shop. Found an interesting set of tongs buried in a heap. I have a piece of 2x2x60" that I'm going to use 3' of for the hammer. Should give me 30lbs of hammer thinking come in the same distance on each end and the hammer can be end for ended keep one end flat and make the other into a straight peen or set it up for different dies at some point. Bored during lunch at work so I did some full scale drawings on the floor. What is the usual adjustment range on a treadle? 12-16" depending on what stock and punches are being used? From what I've been reading you want your linkages parallel to the ground when the strike is made. I'm sure there was a few other things I was going to ask about but minds gone blank.

Went to visit friends, stopped at Mom's welded and fixed her gate. Checked out Dads steel piles found just what I needed to make my treadle hammer. :) Be nice if the old man was around to see what I'm doing... sure he's watching from the otherside. then on down the road to visit. the hard part is the next week of work til I can get back and load up some steel. just itching to start building...

Making of a mammoth shovel at the end of the first video is interesting as well. the guys are holding a hot cut in a split stick wired together. neat also how the metal show where the power hammer was hitting by showing more colour

yeah it is a scale model but it is still a good plan to work off of. making a model to play with in the house might be fun... drat... might have 2 projects now :)

Yep they are treadle hammers. Other better ones out there, but think either of these will fit in my shop. Your coat rack looks interesting.

I'm thinking something like this will be my next project. Pretty sure I have the materials laying around.

Hi Brad, I don't suppose you or anyone else has a bunch of info on Renato Muskovic's anvils. I really would like to have something that gives dimensions. etc. along with how they have been standing up. I have been dreaming of a Fontanini Anvil. but Surrey isn't all that far away. I'm really hoping that the tax man is going to be kind this year.

Hi Frank, was curious about the cross pein hammer. What do you use the divot in the side of the head for. Is it decoration or or setting rivet head or something else?

Well I managed to find a bit of time and finished up my tongs. Not quite happy with them but they will be better than nothing. Mostly a few problems with the riveting. Either things twisting and bending where I didn't want or the rivet bending over as I peened it. Things got better towards the end. Just have to get out and make a few more

After a nice chance to sleep in I went out and restocked the propane for the forge. After that proceeded to take an old steering linkage and turn it into a bottom tool. Not the prettiest but seems to do the job. Then started looking at a few tongs I had started and figured I needed more tools so beat out a few bits and pieces that still need to be finished, but at least I will have a few more options to hold onto things soon. Satisfying way to spend the afternoon. Few dozen more I might have a set or two of nice tongs to hang on the wall.
