  3. being here in baton rouge, big oils backyard i have access to the kind of scrap that yankee farm boys can only dream about, too often , the question is my truck able to carry this? only knowing what is available to me i will tell you how to accumulate some HEROIC pieces of steel. heat exchanger shops cut big round circles out of two and three inch thick steel these big circles a yard across leave such nice "skeletons" these skeleton pieces have a right angle and a radius cut stand one up and an anvil becomes visible the hammer can grow from the end away from you and a lot of work is already done for you , in aother post i will tell about my table i call rosebud it is eight feet x eight feet and two and one quarter inches thick, 5,880 lbs of battleship armor. why rosebud ? you can burn up steel on one side and the other side will be only warm to the touch,
  4. Emmreson horseshoe supply anvils from bossier city louisiana are good anvils with a satisfactory rebound and a nice ring to them very musical. it also comes with a horn so pointy you could sew with it.

  11. hey friend, great news about Stan! He is a real IRONMAN!

  12. Hoo boy! is good to hear Stan is home! A real IRONMAN!
  13. Very sensible advise, Bigun. I dont want to discourage anyone from using what he has available, I can only speak from MY own experiences , and hope no one sheds a drop of prescious bodily fluids due to an easily preventable accident. There was no such a forum as this when I started working metal, we have a golden opportunity to breathe life back into a craft thay WAS dying. At the risk of sounding like "chicken little", I will continue to stress safety. Now, defend the practice of removing the guards on a bench grinder and fitting it with a wire wheel!
  14. well i aint a saint , yet, made me some s.o.s.. i bet an old salt like you knows what that is.

  15. Well sir safety is very important and cannot be overstressed, what we do is dangerous, no doubt, but with some things a risk is built in. A bench grinder wheel CAN shatter and hurt you and all around you a side grinder with a properly rated wheel is less likely to do that and wire wheels on bench grinders with no guards, just plain scare me. A belt sander can hurt you also, and can messup your nail polish in a hurry .
  16. want a posum?

  17. It probably too late to warn you , seems you already got the virus, You will never again be able to pass some JUNK set out on the side of the road, without thinking IRON! gotta have it, Welcome to this mob, all they require is you be nice, and dont cuss in chat room.
  18. The magic circle your feet leave in the dust of the forge, idealy should be round, and as small as you can comfortably work in. From forge to anvil, to power hammer, to vise, to forge. as few steps as necessary. I have two "smallish" london pattern anvils,as i face the forge the one on my left with horn facing forge has a hardy in it most of the time, off to my left and out of the way as far as the danger of hitting it with hand accidentally. So that one is placed so the very sharp horn is out of the way of my thighs and private parts while dancing around in the excited way i get sometimes. The anvil on my right usually has a scroll jig in the hardy hole, or a scroll starter, and is placed so the horn is to my left as i am right handed and that seemed to me the "right" way to set it. So it is really a matter of preferrence, and not some "RULE". The flat side goes up, sometimes. Oh and my third anvil, is a larger london pattern, set on a moveable base so it points anywhere i want it. This anvil is set about an inch lower than the others as it is used for a striker anvil. I say do whats right for you.
  19. HAPPY MARDI GRAS!!!

  20. I love the idea, it should be fun, and interesing to see what gets made. an idea for the NEXT competition, is mechanical nut crackers, something the poor old machinist crowd may get behind also. Pax. and HAPPY MARDI GRAS!
  21. Stuff called liquid wax for torchiers and lamps works well as a finish for NON food contact items for me. lot cheaper than linseed, and not sticky. Pax, and HAPPY MARDI GRAS!
