  1. so what would you guys suggest i use for a slitter? i have some 5/8 coil spring i could use... and btw brian i am going to try one of those horse heads
  2. OUr local supplyer stock alot of stuff and will cut to whatever length you need
  3. so your saying that i should stay awat from the slitter idea? and that Mr.Brazeal has a magical way of making it work?
  4. PFFFT i could do that.... NOT it is soo cool, i have a couple guesses how its made but it is still amazing
  5. that is basicly what i am thinking, but more likley i will make 2 drifts and a slitter and go back and get more if i can find it
  6. i have a big plan to make a trip hammer, but the $$$ is a problem lol, i have become good freinds with the owner of our steel dealer (he saves me the good cut offs) and i have given him a list of steel i will need, he gives me odd jobs to pay it off and i have a shop class where i can weld it all up... a conversation over coffe and a box of doughnuts once a month goes a LONG way to getting steel Josh
  7. turn them into a flatter for me and you got a deal... and i misguessed, they are not quite 1" i think they are a bit smaller maybe 3/4 or 7/8 Josh
  8. took a look again thats what it says! is that a good thing?
  9. i am more interested in the type of stuff that you have posted, felling axes look like a LOT of work (i have no power hammer)
  10. is 1018 and L-6 a good material to start with? or should i start with somthing more simple like wroght and 5160?
  11. KYBOY that helped a TON! i now need to find time to make these tools between school and my weekend job. thank you for taking the time to explain it, time for me to start filling the river with steel
  12. do you have pictures of some of these tools? thanks Josh
  13. i completely understand (and did before) that they are very specialized, i an mostly interested in hawks because of their versatility and how big of a part they played in the fur trade, i like slit and drift hawks with either a hammer poll or a spike, i would like it to be light enough to throw (one of my hobbys) and do some small kinling splitting for my forge i will most likley make multiple differand types of axes and hawks. So what i am asking is, to get started, what will i need to make a slit and drift hammer poll tomahawk of the canadian fur trade time period weighing between 1.5-2lbs Josh
  14. i have been trying to make some axes and was looking around on here for pictures of the tools i need, i cant find any.... also this section dose not have "stickeys" like knife making so, lets start them... what tools do you ude? (pics please) Thanks Josh
  15. the mark is somthing that looks like "spearling?" bronze
  16. :o very nice... i need to try to make a bowie (not at the skill of a pattern welded one yet) Josh
  17. consider your idea stolen i like them alot (i will change them up a bit) Josh
  18. Yesterday I went to our local steel yard and got a whole bunch of cutoffs that were worth about $100 for $20 (coffe and doughnuts go a long way). While sorting through the racks I saw a bin that said "free" on the side so I had a look, grabbed 3, 5"x 1" peices of round bar marked 4140 spark test agrees with that label so I took them, what should I make with them? I am thinking a breazeal type slitter... oh and i also grabbed what i thaught was a peice of 3/4" rnd about 2 1/2 ft long when i looked at it when i got home it was marked "bronze" YAAAAY???? thanks josh
  19. i think it would be nice ground down... i only do the forge finish when i think there is too many things to fix when grinding and maybe add your fuller and leave the inside of it forge finished with a nice shiny back edge, just my thaughts... your the pro ;)
  20. I love your work, it is verry inspiring, if i could afford to go to across the pond to your classes i would! I have been trying to make some axes but have managed to screw most of them up.... oh well i guess they just go into my practice bin
  21. nope... we have nothing within 100kms other than a "flea market" that the local farmers bring product to, i have asked around alot about tools and stuff but nada what i REEEEALLLLLY want is some lessons becaus, as bad at making axes and hawks as i am it is my favvorite thing to make
  22. anyone know a good spot to get a few hawks? i wand a slit and drift hammr poll a slit and drift spike poll and a wrap and weld... so that i can examine them to make more...and play with them of course and i also need a hawk drift where should i get one???
  23. well i got the bits at a big box store... not great quality but its all i have for now the slitter blade cracked and the break looks like i quenched it at a little too high of a temp
