  1. I don't know if this will work for you, but I made up some tabs and bolted them to my blower and then welded them to a pipe on a stand. Granted I am no welder, but it looks like it will work for now. Might make a few tabs for the front of the blower too. I also ground out the pipe so it would cradle the blowers curve.
  2. Generally they'll provide you with whats needed, but I would suggest bringing safety glasses, ear plugs, and a notebook and something to write with.
  3. x2! Just soak it for a few days and see what happens. I would use grinding as a last resort.
  4. Saw this one while I was surfing craigslisst. http://rochester.craigslist.org/tls/3099763528.html Not a bad start of a forge for the money!
  5. Yeah, I've been doing all my cutting with a 4 1/2 in grinder. Thankfully it's all be small stuff nothing bigger than 1/4" plate, but I sure wish I had the cash to get some tanks and a torch setup.
  6. Thanks for clearing this up. I am far away from anything like this, but it's something to keep in mind as I'd like to work my way to doing Damascus.
  7. That's a nice score for sure! I wouldn't mind finding a deal like that around here.
  8. Do you work the billet down from the end you have the bar welded to or from the tip back to the bar, or doesn't it really matter so long as you work one way only?
  9. Ciladog, Maybe I missed this in one of the beginning posts, but how do you prevent the scale build up between the pieces you've tacked together? Do you just wire brush the billet real good between fluxing, or hasn't this been a real issue? I was just curious if this has any affect on the billet welding together properly. Thanks, Jeff
  10. Thanks for the pics LDW! I too hope to get a chance to take some classes with Brian. Every time I see these posts I get jealous, but I hope to have some time next year to take part in Brian's lessons.
  11. I like this idea, but it seems like a lot of work just for one gallon!
  12. Thanks for the info! I picked up the anvil in March and just got around to posting it
  13. If you are referring to the videos that are posted on Brian's google site you'll need to choose the option below the picture and download the AVI file. This worked great for me and now I can save the clay demo of the tong blank and watch it over multiple times so I can practice this myself.
  14. There's a place close to Flint called http://streatfuel.com/ They had coal available the last time I checked. Also, check with MABA http://www.miblacksmith.org/ Their supply is over near jackson.
  15. Not that I know of, but you should check with MABA http://www.miblacksmith.org/
  16. You can also take classes at Tillers International. I took the basic blacksmith class there and it was a good starting point. Like Jeff pointed out check out MABA and go to a few meetings. People there are very open to helping and I am sure could give you a few good tips and perhaps even offer a hand. http://www.tillersinternational.org/ http://www.miblacksmith.org/
  17. Nice restore! Looks like that forge is good for another 100 years
  18. That just seems wrong! And they said Jart's were dangerous :)
  19. If you want to can take off the gear housing and scrape out any old gasket that may be in there. When I took mine apart it looked like it had an old leather gasket. I went to the shoe store and bought a leather shoe lace and soaked the leather in ATF fluid to help soften it before I installed it in the housing. This seemed to help set the gasket and I haven't had issues with leakage.
  20. Yeah, I made a post about this same blower I picked up a while ago. http://www.iforgeiro...__fromsearch__1 I have both this blower as well as the Canedy Otto Royal Western Chief. I found this picture in a PDF file I found about the Canedy Otto Mfg. Co. Hopefully this will help, but like yours mine doesn't have the Canedy Otto name cast into the fan housings. Here's a few pics of my blower Jeff
  21. Sounds like I missed a good meeting. Check out Tillers International for their Blacksmithing basics class. I was there this past weekend and had a great time and a new appreciation of how hard this craft really is. I found it was a great way to get my feet wet after I went to my first demo at CJ Forge back in January.
  22. I've picked up a blower which I thought was a Canedy Otto, but it doesn't have any of the normal markings, just part numbers cast into the fan housing The inner housing is listed as C 997 and the outer housing is C 996. I've searched a bit on this blower and haven't found much. Just wondering if anyone has seen a blower of this type before. I am guessing it was manufactured by Canedy Otto for another company due to the fact it looks just like my smaller Royal Western Chief blower. Thanks, Jeff
