  1. velkommen til forumet, flott arbeid på kniver
  2. build the largest you can afford, nobody will be disappointed let him decide where everything goes later
  3. I think 12 x 16 is quite small , I would not go smaller than 16 x 16. We don't know what kind of tooling he has, but he will want more. A single car garage is narrow when the tools are added, A two car could be a decent size with room to walk without bumping into stuff. My first shop was 12 x 29, to narrow
  4. the forge , no....... the anvil, try making one, South shore.......10 hours ? not likely, I made one years ago by hand,.......forging that horn I found out how hard rails were....... I wish I still had it ,....the work alone was a conversation piece, try beating a track for an hour or two into a horn shape, it will open your eyes kudos to the maker
  5. I was a farrier for draft horses 15+ yrs, I kept one shoe....... you can put it around your neck, only one team of clydesdales, it was plenty, although Percheron's were the meanest
  6. Мне нравится ваша работа очень ! Добро пожаловать на форум
  7. I think some insurance company is going out of business
  8. get a 3 " plumbing coupling and make a bending fork, simple.....fast .......clean. Will be ok with the 4" code
  9. as I constantly tell my helper.......If you don't practice perfection on every job, when you are called upon to do a perfect job,... you don't have the skills to do a perfect job, then you are just another blacksmith, good is the enemy of great
  10. maybe you need more coal in the pot, and sometimes if you place the iron to close to the air blast the air blowing will prevent the heat transfer from the coal
  11. "Most of those Appalachian smiths who were interviewed for the Foxfire book avoided forge welding. Maybe it also is not paying attention, as you replied." People seem to think everyone who writes a book is a master smith, not even all the smiths who were "interviewed' might have been master smiths, or even any good ! I've seen "smiths" interviewed on TV who were not even good smiths at all, does that mean their methods should be followed ?, and blindly ? I've seen the blind followers, and sometimes I read their posts.
  12. forge welding isn't the hardest part of the trade, anyone can learn basic lap or end welds in under an hour. if you pay attention..... If you can't get it in that time...... you may be beaten,
  13. now thats a work of art in itself, beautiful work congrats
  14. to many heats, hitting to cold
  15. nice clean job dave, your career is a promising one, I like the bevel edges, a nice touch. Your skills are noticeably improving, you have a good eye hand thing going,...I don't know about that touch mark though,... lol
  16. I made a torch out of 1" pipe, ...pointed one end to a sealed point and flared the other end then ,...and i'm sorry to say....I welded three "L" pieces with a split at the top (looks like a snake tongue ) if I saw this post on wed. morn I would have a pic for you,... if I remember, I'll take a pic on tues., or wed. next week.
  17. do you know I live on the other side of the country ? 3500 miles away,
however if you find yourself on the east coast, I would certainly find time to tire you out at the forge if you so desire

  18. I would be honored to have my contribution included in this memorial.
  19. The loss seems too great to bear God sends us friends to comfort us To show that He deeply cares When we lose someone we love When there’s nobody else around When we feel the saddest and loneliest It’s there God’s love can be found But in the dark hours of the night To soothe our broken hearts The healing oil poured over us That flows into every part It’s like a soothing, healing balm And know He’s by our side He holds us when we feel as though A part of us has died We can rest secure in God’s love peace be with you
  20. before all the re-ducting expense try putting a lit piece of paper up the chimney to get the draft going, all things considered, air pressure and density in summer affects draft,
  21. make them do without a blacksmith,.....re-enactors love their smiths, eventually they will give up the idea
  22. is that a 5/8 sq. turned down to a 1/2" thread? If so,...upset the 5/8 to form the head ....and hows that power hammer working? put a 1/2 inch spacer on the lower die and size the 5/8 down with the spacer as a stop and you won't have to make a swage, it also will give the look you need
  23. think about mesh....it is commercial after all , and for security (expanded metal)
  24. its inside so flat black is good, natural forge finish? coat with either semi gloss or gloss polyurethane
