  1. I just saw this posted for you guys up north looks like a good deal to me pretty much a new hammer at a big discount http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/tls/1909683680.html
  2. Good luck I would eat bean sandwiches for months before I would sell mine
  3. I always remove the sheet metal when I purchase a used welder and blow it out with compressed air, amazing what you can find inside a machine, my tig welder had a mouse living inside at one time but it was pretty crispy when I blew out the machine. A maintenance schedule to blow out dust in welders is a good idea in any shop, more grinding = more frequent, I would not recommend a filter on the machine it would likely restrict the air flow. You could cover a welder to prevent dust from entering when not in use, welding blankets or a canvas tarp work good
  4. Be Careful dude I know how hot it gets up there, maybe a swamp cooler in your shop would help, I know a guy that has a big one I will see if I can talk him out of it. We finally got some sunshine this week it had to be in the upper 60's, man that was rough. Drove into a fog bank yesterday had to put my lights on at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, if you could send ten degrees down here that would help us both out
  5. I think Grant nailed it, I was going cross eyed looking at it, thanks Grant now I can go out to the shop
  6. I have the Ozark patern anvil, I got it from Tom when he was at the Vista conference in 2003 I think it was. This is a great anvil and it is holding up nice it does not have a loud ring and great rebound, it hits back. It is an investment, but money well spent in my opinion
  7. Ya you could forge the talons then do the bundled forge weld that is a great idea that table looks awesome
  8. That "Anvil" is a beauty looks more like $50 - $51 valule for the lot We had a couple of champion 400 blowers on cl recently one guy wanted $375 (our buddy) and another guy wanted $400, come on guys its a $50 item maybe up to $100 if it is real nice
  9. I use pine tar on my hammer hand, it gives good grip and keeps you from getting blisters ( I learned this from Brian Brazeal) You want to get your fire going before you apply the pine tar if you are using coal, the dust will make a mess when it comes in contact with the pine tar. When you are done forging borax will clean up your hands nicely. I saw a guy that was forging with leather gloves on that fit tight, and I thought to myself if that glove gets hot it will be hard to remove, causing more injury. With a loose glove you can just fling it off. I do sometimes use the ove glove that fits kind of tight but I am real carefull not to grab anything that is too hot
  10. Well we have not seen the sun in weeks it may hit 60 today, the coastal fog and wind keep things pretty cool this time of year
  11. It looks like you need to flip the blower over so the oil port will be top side, the blower should coast for a couple of turns after you stop cranking, and only use light oil in it (automatic transmission fluid works good) and it only takes a little bit you do not want to fill it up
  12. That is a great deal, I just recently found out about this stuff and it works great, hard to find out here in CA
  13. these guys made a leg vice it can be done
  14. Thanks Lyle, those are some great shots especially the pictures of the hot cut, great shot when the cut is finished you see it falling away
  15. Ya but I would not give nearly that much money for that machine $250 tops, the older machines are much better made to last
  16. I am not familiar with that brand of anvil but it has seen some use and if it were my anvil I would use it until I found another one
  17. Well you will be limited with that type of welder, yes I have used similar welders. The problem I see with that machine is that it is ac only which is not the best current to weld with. You would be better off getting a machine that has dc capabilities, watch craigslist for used ones. I picked up one of these ac machines for 25 bucks at a yard sale, just like the homie dpot one you are looking at, I gave it to my brother, they are better than nothing but if you are going to buy one I recommend a dc machine. Look for one of these, this is one of my welders that I would like to sell but the market is too soft now. These welders are very heavy two guys can not pick it up, and they run forever. The second picture is the control lever to go from ac to dc current
  18. 200 mile round trip, no problem I have done it for a post vice and also for coal. go go go
  19. The fire pot measures 11x14 inches and it is 1 1/2 inches thick, this is a serious fire pot and the price was very reasonable, anyone that needs a fire pot should look into one of these, the time you mess around building a fire pot would probably equal what you will spend on this and one of these will last 100 times any thing that is mild steel.
  20. I am finally replacing my fire pot as the one that was in my forge when i bought it was cracked right down the middle. I believe that this may have been the result of someone pouring too much water into the fire, I remember seeing Alferd Habermann cringe at the sight of a smith pouring a can of water over the fire, and this is why some of us have adopted the "water mop" I picked this fire pot up when i was in Memphis for the Abana conference. This fire pot is real heavy duty, much thicker than the one that was in there and much thicker than others that I have seen for sale, and Roger and his wife are great people. I want to thank John Mcclelland for bringing the fire pot and the rest of my goodies back to CA for me (saved a fortune on shipping)
  21. My bad I left out a couple of letters so you got this from George
  22. Sounds like you are on the right path, I made some hinges using brass, cut them out on a vertical band saw, the brass moved easy so I did not have to make a jig, which is what you might want to roll the barrels, I saw one recently, maybe I can find it and put a link
  23. Looks good Fe, "dial a ho" I think is what Brian calls it. I need to make one myself, the anvil looks good and Is that forge burning over there? Good to see you getting some time to forge something, I do want to get back up there so we can get some forging done, kind of financially embarrassed at the moment, not broke but badly bent for sure.
  24. Lookin good ironstein, I guess that thing does move fast enough to forge with huh? oh and more pictures dude
  25. I went to the antique fair in Moss Landing yesterday in search of a borax soap dispenser and after 4 hours of searching and asking around I found the wholly grail (first booth where I entered of course). Also picked up a set of babbit scrapers
