  1. Ralphy The proper tool for drifting is on the auction site of IForgeIron.com and currently up for bid.
  2. Anvils value depends on the seller, the buyer, the condition, and how great the need is to either get, or get rid of, the anvil. Different parts of the country also influence the price. Take it to Alaska or Hawaii and because there are few anvils there, the price goes up. That said, you already own the anvil, why not use it? Set one by the forge and the other anvil in another location. Saves walking.
  3. You may want to look at the Lessons in Metalworking > Blacksmithing link on the opening page of the site. Welcome to IForgeIron.
  4. It is just a matter of putting several plates together in some sort of pattern 3x3, 3x4, 4x6, etc and welding them in place. A support on the underside is very important as are good stable legs. The rr spikes can than be dropped into the holes for whatever purpose you dream up. A quick cheap acorn platten.
  5. I am going to guess that you mean to start a thread as follows A Blacksmith can never get/have enough ... (complete the sentence). TIME

  7. Jerry Fire up the search engines ... general key words, and you get a list longer than factory length stock. but look for a long fellow, and then thank Ron Hicks. You saw it on IForgeIron about 8-9 months ago. Click here The Village Blacksmith UNDER a spreading chestnut-tree The village smithy stands; The smith, a mighty man is he, With large and sinewy hands; And the muscles of his brawny arms Are strong as iron bands.
  8. Thomas Look for a product called Lexan. Lexan polycarbonate is one of the most widely known "plastics". Lexan sheet with its unique combination of high impact strength, flame retardancy, and thermoformability makes it ideally suited for security applications. No other plastic can match Lexan's combination of light transmittance (clarity), and the ability to withstand extreme impact. Lexan is far more durable than acrylic, often to the point of being described as "bulletproof" (depending on the thickness of the sample and the type of weapon used). Lexan is used in the aerospace industry for aircraft canopies, windscreens and other windows, but can be found in household items, such as bottles, compact discs, and DVDs. Perhaps the most visible Lexan consumer product is the Apple Computer iBook and the iPod; the gleaming white plastic is Lexan. It is also used in racing cars to replace heavier (and breakable) glass windshields and windows.
  9. The business books or accounting is full time job and should be first task to set up. Operate from day one as a business. As Bruce suggested, keep the business unencumbered and free of debt. Take time on a regular basis to enjoy life.
  10. As the heat continues during the summer, I am bringing this back to the top. Sharing a spare window fan with the neighbor during the heat can go a long way to building a good working relationship. Stay hydrated, stay safe, and check on your neighbors.
  11. cwt Hundredweight, a unit of weight equaling 100 pounds (American, about 45kg) or 112 pounds (British, about 50kg). 1 stone =14 lbs, so 8 stone = 112 pounds 5 cwt brooks = 560 pounds of anvil. This is also the code to figuring out the weight of an anvil. The three numbers stamped on the anvil represent the weight. The first number being 112 pound units, the second being 1/4 cwt units or units of 28 pounds per unit, and the remainder the remaining pounds. This means that the middle number can never be larger than 3, and the last number can never be larger than 27.
  12. We have a shirt at the printers now and will post it as soon as it arrives in house.
  13. The side blast as it is the simplest to construct. BP0238 Simple Side Blast 55 Forge. If you construct the BP0238 forge, you may want to fill the forge with ash (or clay) then scoop out a depression for the fire (saves on the amount of coal being used). Play with the fire (shapes and sizes) till you get the feel for the forge and how it heats. Then take it with you and lay it on the ground and pile a little dirt to cover and hide the sides, instant hole. It is the same forge you used at home so you know how it works. Give the forge away at the end of the day to a deserving lad that showed interest in blacksmithing. Oh yes, find a shade tree to put the forge under. A couple of hours in the hot sun and you will know why. (grin)
  14. Do a search on tongs and look at the way rivets are used. Also search for the nail headers, and rivet headers. Then scale it down for the knife slabs. BP0276 Rivet Header Helper

  16. When you install a wheel on a motor the first thing you should do is to turn it on and let it run at full speed for 60-90 seconds with the expectation of it coming apart. This is not just the first time, but every time you use the wheel (first use for that day). Who knows what could have happened while it was stored or resting for a couple of days. Also keep the wheel dressed and in good working condition. The wheels are consumable items. They wear out and need replaced. Do not feel bad when you need to buy a new one, as by that time the old wheel has paid for itself many times over. BP0379 Consumables is a related Blueprint.
  17. Copper apple butter kettles here are cleaned with vinegar and salt.
