April 29, 200917 yr it was about 3/4 inch i reckon just something i found.. want to try some more copper now i really liked it!
April 29, 200917 yr Hi Beth, Great job! You have a set of letter punches?! How useful! If you like hammering copper, you should try some silver, it's like butter! (Also a heck of a lot more expensive!!) Copper is such a nice accent to steel, I'd love to use more of it too. Colleen
April 30, 200917 yr That's great Beth, They'll look fantastic intermixed with all the other leaves one the every increasing tree. May 3, 200917 yr We've just done a weekend of forging leaves, yesterday up at Lake Mountain near Marysville and today at Hurstbridge and will be touring around a bit more yet. Check out The Tree Project: News page for updates on where we'll be and where we've been. Thanks, Paul
May 4, 200917 yr Got some stainless steel that I hope will work. Sent dad to get it so it's classified under "stainless steel, don't ask me what type they gave me". Will try 'er anyways.
May 4, 200917 yr Let's see what comes then! Any of the 300 series stainless is fine, some are just easier to forge than others. 304 is what's most commonly sold over the counter here in Aus, if you want something else you generally have to be specific when asking.Got some stainless steel that I hope will work. May 4, 200917 yr Thanks so much to all of you who have been making and sending leaves. I wish you could see the smiles on the faces of the people affected by the Black Saturday fires when we tell them about the leaves being made and sent from all over the world. It is truly inspiring to be part of this project. Cheers, Paul
May 4, 200917 yr The smiles are certainly inspiring and so are the tears. I'm not ashamed to admit to taking a big swallow myself on occasion. Stainless steel is as soft as warm butter after talking with victims of the fire. It is difficult to put into words the appreciation the world wide blacksmithing community is receiving for your efforts at the forge. It is deep and heartfelt. I feel absolutely privileged to be representing blacksmiths around the world at these leaf forging days.
May 12, 200917 yr Quango the Florida artis Blacksmithing Ass. South west chapter has sent you some a leaves. Hope the tree comes together well. Cant wait to see the finished tree

For those that are within getting-there distance we'll be setting up at the St Andrews Market which is north of Melbourne and one of the towns severely affected by the fires. Come and say g'day and have a yarn with the locals we'd love to see you, and so would they.

May 18, 200917 yr This might have been asked already but at 20 pages I didn't read through them all. Can the leaves be made out of BRASS? I live in the Alaskan Bush and don't have access to any stainless or large diameter copper. I do have Brass though and would really like to send some leaves. Please let me know and I will get started. Greebe
May 21, 200917 yr Gee you guys like making my life hard! We have tried to keep all of the leaves either SS or Cu for ease of fabrication and aesthetics, but for you, we will make an exception and would be happy to have some brass gum leaves all the way from from Alaska. I look forward to seeing them and thank you in advance for your contribution. Cheers, PaulThis might have been asked already but at 20 pages I didn't read through them all. May 21, 200917 yr Hi to all of you who are still busy making leaves for The Tree Project. If you are in the USA, Canada or the UK and are sending or planning to send your leaves to the California or Surrey leaf collection points it'd be great if you could snap a photo of your leaves first and post it here on IFI so I know what I'll be receiving. I hate surprises!, plus it's good to show off your stuff. Cheers, Paul
