If you like hammering copper, you should try some silver, it's like butter! (Also a heck of a lot more expensive!!) Copper is such a nice accent to steel, I'd love to use more of it too. Any of the 300 series stainless is fine, some are just easier to forge than others. 304 is what's most commonly sold over the counter here in Aus, if you want something else you generally have to be specific when asking.Got some stainless steel that I hope will work. I wish you could see the smiles on the faces of the people affected by the Black Saturday fires when we tell them about the leaves being made and sent from all over the world. Strine Posted May 4, 2009 Share Posted May 4, 2009 The smiles are certainly inspiring and so are the tears. I'm not ashamed to admit to taking a big swallow myself on occasion. Stainless steel is as soft as warm butter after talking with victims of the fire. It is difficult to put into words the appreciation the world wide blacksmithing community is receiving for your efforts at the forge. It is deep and heartfelt. When he gets back on Saturday he's going to get a pleasant surprise then if your leaves have arrived. Please pass on our sincere thanks to your members. For those that are within getting-there distance we'll be setting up at the St Andrews Market which is north of Melbourne and one of the towns severely affected by the fires. I live in the Alaskan Bush and don't have access to any stainless or large diameter copper. I do have Brass though and would really like to send some leaves. We have tried to keep all of the leaves either SS or Cu for ease of fabrication and aesthetics, but for you, we will make an exception and would be happy to have some brass gum leaves all the way from from Alaska.
