Quench bucket question

Featured Replies

Happy Sunday,

I was gifted a Pennz Oil 16 gallon can yesterday, and I intend to use it for a quench bucket. The inside condition is fine, just some light surface rust. Should I even bother spray painting the inside, or will it be just fine? It will just be filled with water.

Cheers!

Asa

Not necessary, won’t hurt.

Shouldn't hurt it - I've also used them for hoods (note the avatar pic) but given the size the fire eventually rots them out.

Great! Thank you. This is where the forum really shines, when people with years experience can point me in the right direction!
Thank Y’all,

Asa

Good Morning,

We have been using them for that for years. If you get one that springs a leak, touch up the rust area with Phosphoric Acid (to neutralize the rust) and seal it up with some Silicone Sealer. or, Go to your local Import Auto Repair facility and ask them to save you a Synthetic Oil 16gal small Drum to replace it.. I get so many, they build-up outside. Great for Garbage containers as well.

Phosphoric Acid is used in Coca-Cola. it is available from Auto Body Repair suppliers, Hardware Stores, Pharmacy's, etc. It is like a strong Vinegar, it will not eat your clothes. It turns the rust Black.

My own quench tank is a stainless steel beer keg with the end cut out. A friend gave it to me after they found it in the garage of a house they’d bought.

thats what I do, use till they leak. Empty and use a new one.

And they continue to serve as a garbage container (don't forget to put a bag in it)

Now I use an old vacuumcleaner. The vacuumpart  is broken, but the stainless steel body is perfect. And it has wheels, very handy.

Hi! Don't paint the inside — just remove the rust and use it; it'll be fine.

Hello Kamo. Welcome aboard!  Glad to have you here.  If you haven't already, please read the "Read This First" post linked above.

We have a couple of active posters from Australia, but not knowing my Aussie geography too well, I'd have no idea if they're close to you.

Keep in mind that water will do what water does in the winter and that is freeze. The ice will push the bottom out. I know this from experience. Usually 2 maybe 3 years until the bottom becomes useless. That is long before the rust is any significance.

That's one advantage of the beer keg: it's designed to withstand a lot of internal pressure. I've had it freeze solid every winter for a decade, with no signs of a leak.

I have a 50 gallon plastic barrel that I use.   Just have to make sure I don't touch the sides too much.  It freezes in winter with no problem and I replace the water in spring after the mice get done trying to swim in it, gathering my projects that melted through.

Good Morning,

I forgot the MOST IMPORTANT Part!!!  When your Bucket has been holding itself for SOOOO Long....It has to Have a LEAK...... DO NOT KICK THE BUCKET!!!!!  LOL

Depending where you live that is not a problem. And even than, the 1 or 2cm of ice it will get on top are a non issue

Gewoon, yes that is dependent on where you live. In Ohio here, which is a couple degrees south of Belgium, they will freeze solid. It may not be a problem for the OP or maybe it is, i do not know. But being a world wide forum maybe a bit of info that could help anyone reading that did not think of it.
