BayardStrachan
Righty ho... I stole an anvil, well not quite but nearly This beauty came up on an auction site for 225 NZD and I brought it straight away. 120 lber. Has a broken tip of the horn, but for 225 I figured that it wasn't too much of a loss. Other than the horn, it looks in pretty good shape, the only other damage being a little bit of chipping at the back near the hardy hole. BayardStrachan
Yes, hopefully it will be good. Even with a bad ring and rebound, it'll still be better than a railroad track
BayardStrachan
The guy I bought it off is throwing In a coal forge for free as well, haven't seen the forge, but for free why not?
BayardStrachan
is it worth rebuilding the horn. i found a pack of hardfacing rods, that i can use, but i read somewhere that the horn is not hardened on forged anvils, so i may not even have to use a hardfacing rod. Thoughts?

NoGoodWithUsernames
Round over any sharp or jagged edges, if you need a fine point use a hardy bick or something similar? Would likely be easier and less trouble than welding and refinishing the horn. My $0.02.
Charles R. Stevens
See the “tired of bick in the thigh” thread…. Seriously less is more when it comes to “repairing” an anvil.
ThomasPowers
Looks more like it was cut off on purpose rather than broken off. Does a head on view show otherwise?
BayardStrachan
Yeah, nah thanks fullas, it was just an idea I had when I found the rods 9 hours ago, ThomasPowers said: Looks more like it was cut off on purpose rather than broken off. ThomasPowers
I prefer to do smaller diameter work on a bick in the hardy hole so I would try to get a price break for the missing end; but be very happy with it anyway.
BayardStrachan
got the anvil today, the horn was defnitely broken off at some point, and it looks like it was also dropped on the horn too, because its kinda rounded out. ring is great, and i havent had a chance to do a rebound test yet. the face is in amazing codition, no cuts dings or any thing, and the edges are very nice. BayardStrachan
Here ya are frosty. I lightly sandblasted it and wire wheeled it to get rid of the horrible silver paint and coated it in BLO . I also started making a stand out of some 100mm thick Canadian Oregon beams. The only markings I could find was a stamped four leaf clover kinda shape on the back foot. Does this point to a specific brand?
