Lincon torpedo welder

Featured Replies

I saw an old Lincon vertical DC welder for sale and was thinking it would be good for my situation, I understandthey have an AC motor to run a DC welding generator? I have an 11kw VFD phase converter, witch will not run a normal 3 phase welding transformer but would run an AC motor happily. My AC arc welder is about 70 years old and doesn't work as well as it could thrugh the long run of cable to the shop.

I use to have an old garden tractor that had a DC welder on it that was driven off the engine, I really liked that thing.

I got it, dont see why it wouldn't run off a VFD, there is no connection between the welding side and the AC motor.

Danger, Will Robinson!

I am so confused.  I am not familiar with torpedo welders.  I will expose my ignorance and ask what is that thing on the right hand side of the picture?  It looks like a still or a old gas pump.  Did you hook up the connection?  Does it work?

I don't know what the thing on the right is, but a torpedo welder is basically an AC motor turning a generator that produces DC current. I hear tell that they produce a nice smooth arc, but I've never used one myself.

Thanks for your reply.  I should have said I am unfamiliar with the use of them.  Search engine explains them in great detail.  But I would like to know what the thing on the right side is.

It bears a startling resemblance to a turbo encabulator.

One of them looks like Robby the Robot and the other like a early model Dalek.

It kinda looks like a acetylene generator  to me, but I could be wrong

John, prior to plugging in I would make sure the girdle spring is aligned to prevent side fumbling.

GNM

Indubitably!

I did an image search and found I few old acetylene generators, an there’s even one place I saw that still selling new ones

Does that chair have anything to do with whales, Scott?

No.  It is all about Monty Python.  I was going to drag Mel Brooks into it but I don't like moderation much these days.....:)

Hmmmm, I often tell new folks to pull up a Comfy Chair to read the archived messages. WOW, what a coincidence!

A Comfy Chair is what you make it.  I have one that would be perfect for Exploding Whale Watching but it puts me to sleep.

Yeah, mine's really good for naps too.

Sometimes other members of the family like to pile on.  This of course adds to the comfy factor.
