April 26, 20206 yr Folks, It resembles an item a young teething brontosaurus worked on for a spell. SLAG.
April 26, 20206 yr Not an ASO, but an old one which has been abused and lost it's hardened face plate. Looks like maybe a Mouse Hole or one of the many clones from back then. But you are right a boat anchor now.
April 26, 20206 yr ASO. Always been a boat anchor. I can see no sign of a steel face plate, even on the heel. No wrought iron/steel face anvil like a Mousehole or Peter Wright was every that graceless and chunky, plus it has a plain casting line at the waist, rough sand finish (much worse than a Vulcan or Fisher) and raised numbers.
April 26, 20206 yr Never give up, never surrender!! Tons of potential, perfect candidate, worth its weight in .... peanuts anyway. I'ld definitely hang on to it. Prime candidate for an anvil repair day at an ABANA event.
April 27, 20206 yr CAST IRON; the 70 cast proud of the surface is a give away; as are the Brontosaurus bites. Good example of why I don't suggest cast iron ASO's even as starter anvils. I don't think even an affiliate anvil repair day would take that one on
April 29, 20206 yr I have one anvil similar to this one in slight better condition. I also felt sorry for it and acquired it "el cheapo". I am going to use it for another exercise on stubbornness repair. Previous owner did not use it as a boat anchor but as a candle holder! The anvil surface is covered with wax, probably more robust material than the cast iron!
