Rivetless Scroll Tongs

Featured Replies

That's really cool, I might have to give this a try after I get set up. I want to do the riveted type too though for the experience.

I've wondered about tongs with a joint like that. I've seen a few smaller tools with similar joints before and saw a video on YouTube where a guy made a small wooden pair of tongs from one piece of wood and that made me want to try. I haven't taken the time to try it yet but that may have to change after seeing this.

here is a video of rivetless tongs

Ok now, quit showing off. Two pairs  of functional tongs in two days is hard enough for some of us. Doing two of those in two days isn't acceptable. lol

Thats a really cool concept

dose the joint slip at all in use?

Cool tongs, well done.

Roy Underhill whittled wooden pliers from a single piece of wood on an episode of the Woodwright's shop. I don't know how many years ago though, couple decades maybe?

Frosty The Lucky.

How does it hold up with the sideways twisting torque that is common with scroll  tongs ?

I'm assuming that unless the parent stock can fit through the hinge mortise both the working end as well as the reins have to be shaped after the two pieces are assembled

Is there some advantage with a joint like that ?

More "meat" than just one rivet. The joint is stronger especially when you twist it.

It looks harder than putting a rivet in, but you get bonus points for thinking outside the box.

Just made this set yesterday. This was my first attempt at a box joint, and is sure a long way from the perfect fit a lot of the old pliers I've collected have. I chose to use a rivet in addition to the box joint, all of my old examples have a rivet.  All forging, except rivet hole was done prior to assembly. I plan on practicing and making others, as play time allows. Any suggestions, or formulas for a better fit out there? Al

There’s a British farrier tool maker, Jon Nunn, that makes tongs and nippers in this fashion, with a rivet. I doubt they are individually hand forged but they sure are pretty. Pictures are pretty tough to come by though.
