Hi All,

I’ve been lurking around here for a bit, and finally registered.  It seems like it’s only proper to move out of the shadows and introduce myself.

My name is Brian, and I’m a 40-something engineer.  (I know, I know, but don’t groan yet…)  I have twin daughters (teenagers) and a wife that has put up with all of my tinkering interests for almost 20 years.  We live on the west edge of Indiana right where the state border goes from a straight line to following the Wabash river.

I do love to tinker.  I have built things my whole life and much prefer to be in the machine shop at work than at my desk.  I literally grew up in dad’s woodworking shop.  When I got into college, I discovered the wonder of a machine shop.  Now I can’t live without both of them.

Over the years I have been fortunate enough to work alongside some great old machinists who were willing to teach me a thing or two.  As a machinist, these days, I make a mighty fine engineer.  However, I can find my way around and manage to pull off something nice once in a while.  Here is a link to a steam engine model I built last year.

Good to have you with us.

Nice little engine you made there. You'll be building your own power hammer in no time!

The stuff is out there. You just have to look harder some times than you do others. Best bet is to get yourself involved with a local group. Often guys will locate items like forges and anvils and hold them until they find someone looking to pick one up to start. That or they've upgraded and don't use their original one anymore.

Welcome aboard Brian, glad to have you.

If you start using the TPAAAT you'll find your anvil and other equipment faster than you'd believe. Just search the IFI site, it's here. My father was a metal spinner and machinist ad I grew up working in his shop so I know how sweet a nice lathe is and how satisfying it is to turn things out. (yeah, pun intended)

I'm thinking I expect to see your WIP pics of the steam powered line shop as you build it.

Welcome to the affliction, blacksmithing is very addictive and there's no cure so just dive on in and enjoy the ride.
