Twisting Square stock.

Featured Replies

I cold twist 3/8" Square Hot Roll stock 10 feet at a time. This gives an even twist the whole length. Cold roll doens't twist evenly. The tool is a large Tap holder. post-1316-0-25231000-1380683645_thumb.jp

with my larger twisting wrench I once twisted a RR spike cold---not annealed or forged either.

I've found that I can buy cold twisted stock cheaper than I can make it.  In fact I am usually found untwisting twisted scrap that I've gotten for free to make tent stakes from---usually leave one twist in it to help with holding in the ground.

I agree Thomas , I have a ton of R & R spikes that I have been hammering out for tent stakes with a twist and making them longer with a hook type head folks round here love them .

Sam, I've tried carving heads on some of my RR spike tent stakes; originally for the practice and now for the fun when folks notice.

With my old fullering powerhammer making a long tentstake from a spike took me 2 heats

RR spike heads make natural snake heads. Ought to be good for a double take sending someone to pull your stakes. Hmmmm?

Greetings Zbear,

I have twisted many many square bars in the past...   I my old shop I was able to twist  3/4 square bar 15 foot cold with my eagle roller with adaptors..  I made a slick twisting machine from 2in 3/8 wall square tube with a torque multiplier from a truck lug bolt system..  16 to 1 ratio...  I used a ring roller style wheel to drive it and square sockets for the drive connector..  I could add up to 20 ft of extension ..  The holding end was a modified pipe vise...    Cold roll square stock will twist even but you must have a consistent and even drive..  The metal will get warm.. Ever wonder why the metal does not change length when twisting...    Next time you twist heat a  small section with the torch and reverse twist...   All twist are at the weakest link or the hottest it will not change the original twist or unwind it...

Have fun

I use a chevy 1 ton tranny with a granny first, and power it with a Rigid 300 pipe threader. I have twisted 2, 3/4"square, and two 5/8" square together to make a sort of cable10' at a time, as i usually dont need more.

I would love to see your set up, that sounds fantastically Frankenstein.
