yesteryearforge Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Playing around with an idea that popped into my head while I was supposed to be doing something else Quote
CurlyGeorge Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Now Mike, That is COOL!! I like it. Thanks for sharing it with us. :) Quote
Steve Sells Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 you have a unique talent Mike, thank you for sharing. Quote
Ted T Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 You have become a "Hands-On" blacksmith over the last while. But to our benefit. You have hit on a "NITCH" that may have no end to what you may create. Very artistic + Good Idea + Fine forging = "A very nice product indeed" :) Quote
Randy Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 I have to hand it to you, Mike, great job! How are you cutting it out before forming? Quote

De St Uby Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 When the hand follows the thought..... It is magnificent! Quote
MLMartin Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Looks good! Any tips of forging? I actually have to make 15-20 little hand before the end of the school year. Mine will be about 3" long and 2" wide and 1/4" thick. They are for my capstone project at school. I am making the "Aten" its an Egyptian god, represented by many hands on the end of sun beams showering down on the people. I tried welding one up the other day out of some flat bar and round bar. Tack welded with mig, then forge welded. Came out ok but still not smooth enough for me. I am thinking about making a top and bottom die to help me true them up, or maybe for the whole shaping process.? Ill post a picture tomorrow Quote
yesteryearforge Posted February 21, 2012 Author Posted February 21, 2012 It was pretty straight forward traced my hand with a soap stone on a piece of 1/2 " plate Cut it out with an O/A torch Then forged it into shape. I had to let the right hand know what the left hand was doing though. I had a ready reference close at hand :) Could also have used a hot cut but no one was looking so I broke out the smoke wrench. The quill turned out a little screwy ( I may re do it ) The whole thing took about 3 1/2 hours. Probally would have turned out better if I had taken a little time with it. Quote
MLMartin Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Here is the little hand I am working on. This was just a prototype. The next one will be a little bigger. In the picture there is a 6" ruler for scale Quote
