November 9, 201114 yr check with other blacksmiths in the area... anytime there is a large gathering or a annual council meeting someone will have coal for sale...
November 9, 201114 yr Author thank you all for the help and jeffro thats the problem the only other blacksmith i know of in the area is my best friend who is as new as me and the closet group is quite a distance away but i also don't know all the people in my area so yea you never know. Tim
November 9, 201114 yr Carpool to a group meeting! We used to carpool for a 2 hour drive to get to SOFA meetings from Columbus OH. Here in New Mexico I get to drive almost 100 miles just to see my Doctor and the next Blacksmithing meeting will be a 2 hour drive both ways for me. Once you get to a meeting introduce yourself and ask if there are any smiths local to your area---it's been more than once here where someone said there wasn't any smiths in their area only to find out there was someone within 5 miles of their place.
November 9, 201114 yr anybody know if aetna coal in Wildwood, Ga is still open? They're about an hour from me, but the phone number listed is disconnected. I've got a brand new coal forge and no coal to put in it.
November 10, 201114 yr Author thanks for the help i will look into it, i'm trying to avoid ordering coal as it becomes quite pricey
November 10, 201114 yr Buck Coal&Ice out of Columbus, GA is where I get my coal. Last time I bought some it was $12.50 a 50 pound bag. The coal isn't the best (oily and smoky) and you may have to chip some down yourself, but cokes really well and is very clean when it does so. Gonna go back and get a truck load next month.
November 10, 201114 yr Author I might be able to get to Columbus on my way through Atlanta for thanksgiving, but i think i found a supplier in Macon that would be much easier for me to get to as it it only like an hour and a half away. thank you for your help.
November 10, 201114 yr Coal near Atlanta (looks like heating grade... better than nothing)http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/grd/2639365572.html
November 10, 201114 yr I live 20 miles from the heart of middle Tn coal mining region and I can'tr find anything local. It can be frustrating for a new smith or a farrier/smith turning from gas to coal as in my case.
November 10, 201114 yr Author Thanks for all the help and i have never used gas always just ordered coal or made my own charcoal but i decided that i wanted to find a affordable place to get coal as it works much better/ is cheaper than ordering. Tim
November 11, 201114 yr I would suggest Sidney Lee Welding Supply, 2247 U.S.Hwy 41, Hampton, GA 30227. Ph 770 946 4287. Very good blacksmithing coal, 50# bags Jerry
November 11, 201114 yr Author Do you have any idea what the price their is as i'm trying to find a price bases for it. all info is appreciated. Tim
November 11, 201114 yr I last bought there about two years ago and it was $15 per bag, May be about $17 now. Best is to call and ask. I bought a 1000# and got a better price. I know of one source in the vicinity of Macon that the price is right but for me the quality is not for me. In bulk, stoker coal , lots of fines and to dirty. Jerry
November 12, 201114 yr Author Doesn't bother me to much i'm kinda to the south its just easier to go to Atlanta because ill be up there next week anyways i'm going to Macon tomorrow and their is a place up there i plan to check but they may be closed for veterans day and all so yea i don't know we will see and i will post back if i get it. Tim
November 12, 201114 yr Is there anyone who can sell me coal.I am willing to pay but i am on a tight budget so anyone that can help me out please do, it will be greatly appreciated.
November 12, 201114 yr Where are you located? How much coal are you interested in buying, 5 pounds or 5 tons?
November 12, 201114 yr So does any body have a general price comparison via the region for coal by the ton? I remember within the last 10 years seeing it for around $100 less shipping... How many grades or priceing standards are there?
November 12, 201114 yr i buy mine from sidney lee in macon. last i bought was a little over 19.00 for a 50lb bag with tax. you should look in to joining the ocmulgee blacksmith guild or south georgia blacksmith guild out of savannah. i have been in the OBG for 2 years now. great group of guys and alot of knowledge in both guilds. let me know if you want any info for joining. Randy
