Pat Roy
Maybe I'll have to try it, but I won't be lighting any cigaretts.
edge9001
it really is impressive how just the friction of the hammer hitting cold steel is enough to get it that hot. at least I've always been impressed by it.
ThomasPowers
It's not friction it's the transfer of kinetic energy into deformation that creates the heat. Friction would be rubbing it like when you light a fire with a bow drill.
MattBower
I've seen video of a fellow taking 1/4" square to what looked like a yellow heat that way. I tried it once, with no success. Recently I was drawing some stock to a fine point over the horn, and when it got it down fairly small I did notice that it was getting brighter with each blow. But that was starting with red hot iron in the first place.
