  1. There's no noticable recoil. I have a couple .22 cal gas piston air rifles and the .17HMR is far more accurate and at a greater distance. It's a rimfire round not an air pistol. The air rifles shoot an 18 grain pellet at about 1000fps and the .17cal round has a muzzle velocity of about 2200- 2600 fps depending on the powder charge. You can get high velocity rounds. The biggest difference between a 17 Cal and 22LR is accuracy. The 17 cal is a necked down 22mag. Its pointed instead of round. It has a flatter trajectory than a .22LR. I haven't hunted with a .17HMR but for target shooting I like it much better than a .22LR. The only drawback is it's more expensive to shoot than a .22LR and sometimes harder to get ammo. Pnut
  2. I stand corrected. Yes it is urea formaldehyde. It's been many years since I spoke with my friend who is a wildlife biologist. He works/ worked in the Smoky mountains for the Park department dealing with the black bear population. She specifically mentioned the smell of the foam being similar to an ant or termite colony. Most cars have layer upon layer of enticing odors for bears from peanut M&M's that fell between the seat last week to cologne and the breakfast burrito you ate on the way to work. Bears have amazing noses. Frosty I have a Taurus 17 Cal. That shoots like its part of my hand. I love target shooting. Pnut
  3. Have you looked through the jabod threads in the solid fuel forge section? You could probably build a jabod today out of scrap wood and use a hair dryer for a blower or make a ground forge. How do you light your wood fire? You can light charcoal the same way. Charcoal is easier to light than wood or just throw some charcoal on the wood fire. Pnut
  4. Bears are also attracted to the foam used for car seats. I don't remember if it's produced with formic acid or a compound that smells like it. Some ants and termites produce formic acid and insects are like bear hors d'oeuvres. They love em. Pnut
  5. Have you done an internet search? Steel supplier near Sussex New Jersey or New Jersey Steel Baron. New Jersey Steel Baron does online sales. I have a steel supplier 15 minutes away from my house. If there's a steel supplier near you maybe doing some extra work around the house might get you a ride from a parent. I don't think anyone's Mom likes doing dishes. I'm sure you could figure out some kind of deal to get a ride if there's a supplier not too far from you. Just a thought. Pnut
  6. A Mossberg plinkster was 99 dollars the last time I saw one. A dog inside the shop at night will keep the critters away although it could cause damage of it's own. Make sure it's up to the task though an angry coon can give a lot of dogs a good fight that the dog might not win. Pnut
  7. I used to have a Stanley 45 combination plane that was my stepdads. I never did figure out everything you could use it for. I don't know what ever happened to it. Pnut
  8. Check the tank daily for floaters. Pnut
  9. Dead critters, unless you get the non toxic anti freeze. Pnut
  10. I've had my eye out for a piece of steel to make a stump anvil from for about the last year. This is the only thing I've found. It works ok for punching and cutting that I don't want to do on my rail anvil Pnut
  11. Is there a coating of oil on any of the burner parts? Pnut
  12. I thought about including a warning about trespassing. I'm glad you said it. I'm not sure where the op is located but it's deer hunting season in KY and that too could have some regrettable consequences if you're moving through the trees and brush and the land owner doesn't know you're on their property. Pnut
  13. You've been a busy lad. Keep it up they look great. Pnut
  14. Do you know the owners or family members of any owners of farms. They usually have old machinery and equipment and just good ol junk somewhere on the property. Ask if you can take a look and find some usable steel. In rural areas there's also usually illegal dump sites in hollows or at the bottom of hills along the road. If you can find one you may hit the jackpot. Remember be careful though poking around rusty scrap. You can get cut or get nails through your shoe. Pnut
  15. He looks like a kelso rooster. But that's just a guess. Pnut
  16. I haven't cut a hole in it yet. I have it measured for the fireplace pan but I'm still looking into other options. I've been thinking about cutting the legs shorter and just using bricks to contain the clay. That way I can modify it later if I want to without a twenty four inche hole In the middle of the table. I'm going to try the bricks this weekend probably. Setting a box made from 1x 10's on top of the table is another option. Pnut
  17. Looks like you have all the bases covered. The pump you have should hold you over till you get the new one delivered. Good luck. Pnut
  18. That'll do it. Some pumps cool their motor by the amount of air entering the intake so if you slow down the motor they overheat. I'm not saying that is the kind of pump you have I'm just passing on some info Pnut
  19. Try places that do welding and fabrication, machining, mechanics, suspension shops, scrapyards, recycling drop offs. You have to get out and look. It's expensive to ship steel. It's heavy. If you can get it cut to fit in a flat rate USPS box you can get quite a bit of steel shipped to you but I think the largest flat rate box is 12x12 inches. I don't remember the depth off the top of my head but the drawback is that the pieces will only be a foot long. Good luck. Pnut
  20. Did you take the pump out of the pipe and just aim it at it? I use a ball valve to adjust the airflow. I have a hose coming off the pump hooked to a ball valve on the tuyere pipe. It's has a pretty large range of adjustability. From just barely any air to blowing the fire out of the pot. Pnut

Have you tried tractor supply company? They have quite a few black oxide coated bolts of larger size and different grades. They sell them by the pound Like a real hardware store. Pnut
  22. How about a lean to blocking the sun made out of a tarp some rope and a couple of poles? It has worked for me. Pnut

Never shoot at a good old fashioned hardware store, because they may shoot back. Pnut
  24. Some refractories need to be placed in an airtight container with something to add humidity to "set" properly but as Frosty mentioned it may not be the case with the refractory you used. Pnut
