A person asked for my advice on this but with only one photo I am not sure. I would like to give them some more information. I am thinking cast.

I am aware of the crazy prices for the mini Hay buddens, Fishers and the like none of these are them I have found the ones I do have the offers I have been getting are between 20-60 each for the smaller stuff and only about 3 or 4 have foreign names being china and india. I already sold the big HB which paid for the whole collections and a little extra so now its time to pick and choose which might be one or two smalls and maybe the Arm & hammer.

LOL I am aware I do like anvils but for me it’s more a means to an end. I like buying stuff just to fund my shop whether it’s the the swage block I am looking for or that 300 lbs HB I want I have managed to obtain all my equipment 90% done through this so if selling these off these cover the cost of something I need it’s worth it.

Yeah the HB is my favorite by far wish I could keep it but that alone is paying for the whole collection. If Hay Buddens are your second what’s your first?

Yeah I was impressed with his collection now got to figure out what the little anvils are worth

I just bought this collection yesterday figured the group would like to see it before I end up breaking it up and selling it off.

Not worried I am no collector so they can rust because i use them. I was curious if anyone had any other technique besides the ones I use. I didn’t know about the fan running helping.

Yeah so far the best I think I have found is a thin layer of chain saw bar oil as long as you clean it off before you use your anvil it works well but yesterday was rough everything that was bare metal had a nice coat of rust on it that. I think I will give a box fan a try the next time it warms up

Unfortunately being in the Midwest and living less then a mile from the Great Lakes we have lot of humidity.

Every year around this time all my stuff sweats when the temperature and humidity changes I find oiling then helps but that can gets messy I heard beeswax also can be used. I am curious what everyone uses.

I thought I would share came across this guy today and had to buy it. Its the first Peter wright farrier I have owned.

Unfortunately, I have very limited information. I have been able through limited research been able to figure one maybe from the 16-17th century based on what I believe to be a musket ball test. I can't confirm it but the dent coincides with similar damage done on those tests. The other one has Nicolo Da Ponte on it who was a Doge of Venice. I don't believe it to be authentic to his time period but maybe a piece made to commemorate him at a later date.

I figured you guys might appreciate these. I inherited them from my father who got them from our family restaurant when it closed. I have no plans on doing any work to them other then preservation. I know they are missing some finger joints These guys are one of the reasons I got into blacksmithing years ago.

Curious if anyone has done this? I have made a temporary one but need something more permanent. I have heard leather strip shaved, glued and riveted is how it was done in the old days. If anyone has any recommendations or videos I would appreciate it.

That price is not unreasonable but in that condition it’s collector priced if your just starting out get something a little more worn in for cheaper

I am picking it up tomorrow as most people on here know I get lots of anvils (50+ a year) in I only really keep Hay buddens( my favorites)I will be cleaning it up in the next couple days and will post photos of any stamps or any other identification marks I find for you guys.

Someone on another site gave me the answer that its a very early HB

I know there was a company in chicago that made anvils with SDK but I thought they worked with Hay Budden and this one looks like a Peter Wright?

I personally base my prices on the quality of the work I do. If it's a custom piece I will give them a price and send them photos of updates once they hit that budget if they don't like it they can either pay more or lose there deposit( I have had customers not happy and want it changed after I consider it done) I will never make anyone pay(aside from the deposit) for something they are not happy with. I also wont make them pay more if i get the hours wrong. I know its not a set rate but it works for me.

That's the one thing I don't understand 99% of these "new blacksmith" are learning from tv shows or internet videos why do that have such an affinity for old anvils. I mean I will say this spending 1000 on a new video game system vs 1000 on an overpriced anvil the anvil is still the better investment.
