Forged from bearing race
Forged from a slice of outer bearing race. Brass is from the separator. Black paper marcata trim. Not sure the type of wood but I've had it laying around since the mid 90.

Cable Damascus
Thanks. I twisted it two times to get it that tight of a pattern. I sure hope I get it right on the next one.

Cable Damascus
This is a new way to finish that I've been playing around with. I almost threw the billet away because of the open weld. Glad I didn't.

Cable Damascus
Yeah that cable is tricky stuff. This is my third attempt and the closet I've come to getting it right. I've been emailing James McClendon . Can't wait to start another one.

Cable Damascus
Forged up some choker cable. It's got an open weld but it's not caused a problem . The handle is maple burl . I drilled the aluminum rod and inserted brass pins. Copper buss bar for the guard and a piece of black and silver dyamomd wood for the butt cap.

Forge welded drop point.
Just finished this one. 4 different metals in 7 layers. Center is a band mill blade from a local sawmill . Then pure nickel , pallet banding and finally Choker cable . Not sure what the wood for the handle is but it finished out nice.

First forge welding attempt
Thanks guys. The blue is turquoise . You can order it from Jantz of Gun and Knife . I tried forging another piece of cable . And could only get to 2045° . I had to lengthen my forge out For the longer cable. Im using a brick pile forge so it's easier to adjust for size. I'm using a 3/4" Frosty T burner I built ....... So I picked up the parts to build a second one . I'm going to run it on its own propane tank . This gives me a lot of flexibility.

First forge welding attempt
Thanks . This really set the hook in me to do more. I picked up a bigger regulator so that should help with the open welds.

First forge welding attempt
Cable and band mill blade San Mai. Muriatic acid etch. The brass button came from the peddle of an old piano. The sheath is hand stitched 8/9 oz vegetable tan with a full deer skin lining. This was my first attempt at Forge welding ,really enjoyed it and learned a lot.

Cable knife
I think the coffee is what I'm going try . I like the dark lines in the decarb areas.

Cable knife

The Wanderer
That's beautiful. I'm working on my first San Mai ( cable and band saw blade) right now. I've made a copper bolster and have been searching for a patina look that I like. If you don't mind me asking how did you achieve that color on your copper . Thanks .

Just finished blade.
Looks good to me . I used 5160 for the first time about a year ago . Made a good knife ........ But a 1/4 " meant a lot of file time

Leftovers...
That looks great . Good use of leftovers.

First attempt
I thought about cutting and folding it after I grind all the decarb off . I've read that you begin to lose the detail of the cable if fold it . The bar stock is not part of knife . If I shorten my forge I might be able to get to 2300 ° . I will need to remove the square stock handle and use my tongs This has been a learning experience and a lot of fun. I started making knives in about 83 but it was all stock removal and then send then in for H.T. . Thanks to net I've found a lot of information on forging . Have to say that heat treating my own and learning to forge has brought out a new passion for knife making. Not liking the toenail polish....... . Guess I need something more blacksmity I have some band mill blade thats from a sawmill. It's 15n20 and ,072 . If I stack a couple of pieces in between and I can 2300° it might look pretty good.

First attempt
Thanks . I don't think I had enough heat. I need to build another T Burner to add to the forge.
