  1. So here is a question. I know that the burner mounting tube should not extend into the shell of forge. So as you can see in this picture, my burner mount extends probobly 1" at the furthest point. Should I just leave it, or should I get rid of the over hang? I tried with my Dremel, but I was not getting anywhere. If I need to remove it, what would be my best way to do so? Thank you
  2. Check out hightemptools.com. That's where I ordered my regulator kit from. I personally haven't used it yet, but I have heard recommendation to this site by trustworthy sources. Hope this helps.
  3. Alright, I got a whole bunch of flat stock that my uncle gave me. They should make nice bottle openers. So as far as the age goes, if you are under 18 does a parent need to be there the whole time? My parents wanted to just let me go there the day and then they go to the antique shops around there. If not, I am sure my dad will hopefully make the trip anyways. Thanks
  4. Alright thank you John. Actually that is what I was thinking of and I just watched the video after I posted the previous post. I already have a plan that I am going to make one and then brush it with a brass brush to give a real nice golden hat. Thank you for reminding me of this wonderful idea!
  5. Hi, For some reason there was no PA artist blacksmith link in the groups section. So I looked and saw that the PABA is having a meet April 4 in Easton that is titled fish demo. I am considering about going. Can someone tell me the details about it, especially if it is still on, what to bring, etc. ? Also, if you are under 18, do you need an adult there? Lastly, can I go if I am not a member and then give my membership there? Thank you very much. Minors must be attended.
  6. John those are so cool! How do you make those? I have read something a long while ago, I gotta find it again. Thanks
  7. Wow that is a nice looking knife! Cant believe that is a first! Great work
  8. I put a coat of high heat paint today. The forge now looks really good! I am going to put another coat on tommorow. At first I wanted a glossy finish, but this finish came out matte. I really don't mind the matte though. Thanks for any input
  9. The first one looks like one I seen that was at a historical village to model what was used on theLewis and Clark expedition.
  10. I went back to the plans and you said to clamp the fitting in a vise to tap it and you also have a picture of it too. What I mean is that I am not using the copper set up, so how should I clamp the nipple for the rubber hose direct set up? I actually think I figured it out anyways though. Just screw the nipple in a coupler and clamp in the vise by the coupler. Thanks
  11. Frosty, I am using a 1/8" secs 80 nipple to build my burner instead of a flare fitting since that is what your alternative plans to connecting directly to a rubber hose say. How should I clamp it to tap? The flare fitting for the other setup has the hex to clamp on. You warned about damaging the threads. Maybe just clamp really lightly? Thanks
  12. Nice hooks! I'm sure you can charge more for them.
  13. Now it looks like people are going to keep copying this show just like they did with those antique and auction shows. I don't mind, better than the other shows.
  14. That portable Hardy was shown in Mark Aspery's first book and a video on YouTube called ring project 4 swage or something like that.
  15. Got my forge welded up today. The guy told me that the welds look pretty crappy, but they should hold up fine. They did go through the shell a bit, but I don't think that should matter. I got it done for free, so can't complain. I am going to give the guy a bottle opener once I get forging again. Now I need to trim up the overhand of the burner mount that's in the shell with a dremel. After that, I just got to line and finish the burner. The parts for my burner came in, but they forgot probobly the most important piece, the scd80 1/8" nipple. They are sending it to me though. I will post more progress once I paint the shell. That brings me to something else. How many coats of high heat do you guys find necessary for a good lasting finish? Thanks
  16. A project is not a failure as long as something was learned
  17. The plate jig is a much more versatile system. I was just giving an idea for a cheaper, simpler choice.
  18. My hardware store didn't carry the reducing t either becuase those aren't sold as often, so here is no need of carrying a product that sits a while. I got mine at Home Depot, but if you want a really good deal for next time go to this website called essentialhardware.com . I was building myself a coal forge and needed a whole bunch of black iron pipe. Home Depot was going to bring me to a total of $75. That website only costed me $35 for the same pipe.
  19. Actually, Alec Steele recommends learning Blacksmithing on a mild steel anvil/block. This way you don't need to worry about messing up your tool or a nice anvil.
