  1. Got tired of things being leaned against a wall and fast becoming a pile, so I made a stock rack. It was 80% done being in that I scavenged the frame from an old shop I used to work at, then just welded studs onto it. Used 1/2 round for the upper ones and some 5/8" for the lowers, much more organized now. I have carried that big steel rack for 3 years now, FINALLY *angry yet accomplished fist shake* it is used for something
  2. ditto! If you get up around Vermont find a town called Grafton and check out the shop there, pretty cool place!
  3. That'd work the same. I get from a farrier supply that is local, they get 3/8" in cold and hot rolled which is A36 and 1018 accordingly.
  4. Nampa you flatter me!! grant's tongs were the best, no doubt he set the standard so I studied them and try to make my tongs along the same lines. Vaughn thanks, I do em under the flat dies, no seperate tooling. When doing it by hand, that extra 10% to smooth things out can turn into 80%!!! thanks Will, Yes I am, why do you ask?
  5. Whirly, that's a good idea I will have to try that! Been wanting to try a sewn leather handle lately too. Robert hey! thanks. Yeah I think it was around 10-11". Not sure what you are talking about, maybe the knots under the leather that finished off the handle wrap? The tang was flat steel not a socket.
  6. Peter thanks alot. Agree getting paid is awesome!
  7. Here is the two sets all finished. Each basic set has 2 flat bar tongs to hold 1/4" thick by 1" and 1 1/2" wide, two sets of bolt tongs to hold 3/8" and 3/4", and a set of fine pickup tongs. Took the time to wire wheel em too to make them extra nice. let me know what you all think. Peter, I hope I didn't give the wrong impression, he paid for these fair and square.
  8. yeah, clamp the blade (wrapped in a towel or such) in a vice on it's side, so you can do the fold then pull it VERY TIGHT then drop a drop of super glue on the wrap over, then flip the blade in the vise and do that again on the other side. And yeah I did :D though to be fair it's only a little 100 pounder a friend was selling on another forum. i sure feel lucky though still :D thanks Gibbo, get to it!!! That's why I started making blades, cause I could not afford or otherwise get the blades I wanted.
  9. Whirly thanks. I modeled it after parangs and goloks. It's a natural chopping shape, but also slicing if it is thin too nice and wide. That wrap is easy, you ever lace up a pair of boots? Left over right then right over left :D
  10. Forged this up from 1084 in trade for a peddinghaus anvil from a friend in CT. It's around 15" overall, Leather slabs with japanese style tan cord wrap over it.
  11. Thanks George, I'll look at the can today i forget the name.
  12. S7 is the king of hot punching tool steels LOL, got it all red and was like "dang got to re-HT it" but nope no worries
  13. Made up a small offset hammer tonight. about a pound, Oak handle Titanium wedge. Also made up an S7 slit and drift tool, and tried out a brand new punch lube, which is the best I have ever used and is commercially available for fairly cheap. It is good to 2400F according to the label, and I have verified that by painting it onto glowing hot steel. Punches slide in easier and pop right out like butter.
  14. Forging some tongs for a fellow having a hammer in at his shop that has no tongs, so two full basic sets here, 20 pieces making 10 tongs 5 per set. Sets includes two flat bar tongs for 1" and 1 1/2" wide by 1/4" thick, two bolt tongs for 3/8" and 3/4", and one set of fine pickups. got these all forged in about 4 hours today. Going to get them all jaw formed then drill the holes for the rivets, then hot rivet them all tonight then final fit and tweaking tomorrow. Shipping monday overnight to Alaska for the 1st annual Arctic Fire Hammerin live web broadcast! Info here: http://forums.dfoggknives.com/index.php?showtopic=22731&st=0 and photos:
  15. All those suppliers will pale in comparison to Aldo Bruno the NJ Steel Baron! http://stores.njsteelbaron.com/StoreFront.bok
  16. I do! and I will get to it this week hopefully, or maybe save it for my class at PV! I was thinking of putting a stop fence and a slitter on mine, even if it can only do 1/4" hot that's cool.
  17. Yeah, trim them on the bottom and they are perfect, you don't think they didn't trim them back then? as for lining up the sockets, if you can get them straight, heat the very little bit between the blade and socket then twist it to line it up. Use a torch, keep the socket as cool as you can.
  18. Thanks for all the detailed wonderful photos! a very nice machine. I would love to see video also I hope you can get it sorted!
  19. Also 4 blocks 2" thick by 10" wide by 18" long of 1018.
  20. Awesome Craig!!! Nice size machines! I have not made up tooling yet for my little 2 ton but I want to try some hot work on it.
  21. trade you both that saw and slip roll for that air hammer Woody :D
