  1. Thanks guys!!!! I will track down some nice curly maple for the handle and shine and stain it up nicely! I agree, any chimp with a grinder can make something shiny and look like every hardware store special LOL, however I have never seen a hammer like this in a hardware store. It's not what finish you use, it's what you make. Pandering about which finish is "better" is a foolish point, like anything it's personal to anyone's skill and preference, and it's offensive really to say others should do this or that finish or they are inferior.
  2. Thanks everyone! Larry, fugeddaboutit I get what you are sayin. I personally prefer to vary everything I do :D I agree though, I like your forged finish hammers Brian (and do want one terribly), I like to forge finish also have you seen my knives? I respect forge finish more, I think it takes much more skill. the grinding and polishing on this was an easy sort of fun thing to do. I don't think grinding and polishing take all that long, nor are really hard to do at all, it's easy when you can sit and think about what to do next, then just grind away, filework even more so an easy and simple task. Nampa heck yeah! I don't really do repousse I find it kind of boring, but leafing yes! that's what this hammer's for!
  3. I was going to make this into a claw hammer but was warned it was fine as is :D let me know so far what you all think.
  4. OK cool, thanks Phil I understand. Sounds like the machine for me, if nothing bigger turns up in the next couple weeks.
  5. But what about most of the modern hammers, Say Mak, Kuhn, Anyang, Striker, all considered to be perfectly fine and happily working away in industrial and fulltime shops all over the US and world, all seem to rely (the on piece hammers atleast) on a small anvil, they are maybe 10 to 1 if you count the foundation but not the anvil mass directly under the ram.
  6. looks like a Bruce hammer, pretty lady and hot rod is definite giveaway!!!
  7. Phil, thanks for the photos!!! it looks like a nice stout size. just one question if you could, with a real forceful spin about how deep with one blow could you make a center punch mark? Hollis, I am keeping my eyes and ears open, i am living in Maryland currently and daily craigslist turns up nothing. I am in no rush also, so i am looking:D
  8. I am talking about using the anvil, ram guide post and ram arrangement but using an inverted spring hammer linkage, not an air/mechanical linkage hybrid.
  9. I wouldn't touch a new anvil, as need would arise I would dress an edge, that way it would slowly work into the anvil you want for things you do. You can not as easily resharpen a corner as you can round one over.
  10. Craig, not talking about putting one between the ram and an air piston but making it completely non air. It's for sure a downgrade compared to the pneumatic controls, but I think it would allow for a short compact hammer with a small footprint. I know Jock Dempsey sort of casually thought about one, but using his poorly designed rear end drive and shock absorber linkage.
  11. Is there no reason why a mechanical dupont/spring linkage would not work with an old style Bull hammer frame design?
  12. Dick that was all I found too, seems like the ticket for the type of work that fellow is doing (which is very nice), wondering if anyone has anymore or owns one.
  13. Nice Bryce, glad to see you got it!!! Killer price too.
  14. Looking at getting a small fly press for some light tooling and punching work, and looking at the #0 from oldworldanvils. Was wondering if anyone has one, and if they can put up a photo or two with a soda or pack of smokes for scale.
  15. Scott, my pleasure! Glad it helped. I find it easier to keep things in a straight line until I have to, better to keep them identical.
  16. Sakadt thanks! they are around 16-18" reigns. I like like longer reigns for the gas forge.
  17. Looks good Gerald! How did you do the angled eye?
  18. Ain't 2800$ no more hehe Knots that's a Beautiful hammer!!!!
  19. I can tell you this stuff get's HARD, more then enough for a knife which, what a coincidence, I just finished up last night from that piece you gave me Craig :D
  20. John I did not see the second link to the 24" by 3" one?
  21. thanks alot guys! Samcro 400$ shipped :D Theo, no none.
  22. Yes I like that kettle hat very much more like the pictures.
  23. Hijack away! I am honored my tongs inspired that way!! in honesty again, it took two days but they were short days so I could have done it in one :D Once you have a powerhammer, things change!
