  3. hey lumpy... sounds like your wanting to do sheet metal work... its alot like armoring..... so alot of the info you can find on armoring will help you....sense you have other metalcrafting skills already making your own tools and tooling should be a snap( for basic sheet work i use a tree stump and a ballpeened hammer).... good luck to ya !

  7. i picked up an anvil today...a gift from a mentor ,a non smith... whos health isnt great atm..starting to clean up nice..200lbs
  8. moutinsmith... if you can get rr rail cheap/free... get a 4 to 6 ft piece and set that bugger like a fence post..... use the end section of the rr rail cap to forge on.... it will out work ANY rrrail anvil... keep a smaller piece of rail off to the side for flatting and straighting.....
  9. woohoo!!!! big donkey anvil!!! gotta love it!!!! actually it was john falls from old moneta ironworks that bought the anvil from you stu, i got the monster vice and blowers.... i ended up trading john a euroanvil(insert sad horns here) for that pw.... regardless its a great anvil and hope it brings you many good years of service daniel
  10. wow!!! what a great link !!!! thanks!!..as mentioned i had probs with plates 17,18,and 19 as well a shame, but still a great resource...that 1st spring hammer seems to me to be more like a eariler spring hammer than a later one like the champion....sure they work the same way but in the plate pictured that hammer was built far heavier like a williams and white , belden, or a scranton....champion,the perfect ,star, the boss(and others i'm sure) where all lighter forms of those hammers...ive owned both a novelty ironworks boss 25lb and a champion no1 65lb great hammers !!! no doubt!!! love them!! so if you like/ love that style find a ww or scranton and prepare to be amazed!!!......... btw is anyone out there running any niles air /steam hammers in the 300 to 400lb range ??
  11. if you need an anvil... not a great deal..... if your wanting wrought iron.... not such a bad deal for 150lbs of wrought..... theres guys on here that charge 2 and 3 pr lb...
  12. dear goodness brotha!!!! you hit the jack pot!!! you should be able to fab up most of what needs to be repair... you going to have a top of the line machine when your finished!!!!!!!!

  14. gotta love secrets!!!!! sam have you seen any of mark's 1st two books ??? i would guess after looking at the tooling in those, that its all about the backing, soooooo possibly a angled back plate....cant wait for book 3....nice looking hammer's gb.....you still working for steven stokes ???
  15. hey just a quik fyi that ore to axe video was shot in lee sauders shop... and the ore fired in his furnace... and the axe forged on his anvil.....
  16. hey ford... in the 1st set of pictures you posted...in the last pic in the floor beside the hammer..right hand side there is what seems seems to be a jackshaft... are you planning on using that on your hammer ???? if not you wanna sell it ??
  17. i cant add anything to what has been stated here so far...that said if you dislike the amount and depth of scale your getting, your gas forge may be causing that issue... love your horse head btw
  18. thats a sweetie!!!! grats on your find!!! the shop i got my hammer outta had a sweet one as well...but i know it had to be a loud one when it ran.. the tumbler body was made out of cast iron panels(with a 5hp 550volt motor)...
