etching help
I use ferric chloride diluted 6:1, soak 20 sec, scrub with 0000 steel wool, clean (I use Windex) and repeat till the pattern shows. I also sand to atleast 800 before etching. After the etch hand polish with mothers or some other metal polish. Do that till you get the finish you want.

II know it isn't a knife but they're a set so here is the ring. I'll forge the blade later this week.

If its the original tang then probably. Depends on the handle you want.

Looking good, I would clip the tip down to have a bit of a flat to make it a good skinner. Similar to this one but just enough to allow raising the tip when skinning.

I haven't started the blade yet, I'm going to try cable Damascus for the guard and pommel. This is my first Damascus billet so I want to do a blade and a ring from it. 16 layers twisted then folded and drawn out. 8 layers of band saw blade and 8 layers of flat spring from a hose reel.

Those tiny imperfections that only we notice will drive you crazy, I still think it's a nice blade but I also understand how the detail can get to you. That mentality will push your skills and make you better.

heat treating an anvil
Well I used the anvil for a bit today and it works great. The ring is nice but not to loud and the rebound is good. All in all I'm really happy with it and now I'm contemplating a smaller one for traveling. Even though I've already said I would build one again, if the second turns out as good I'll be set.

Ferric chloride. Not a polish but it will show the hamon. Acid, fine steal wool, clean, repeat, then polish with mothers.
