  1. Welcome Mark! Welcome to IFI Be sure to go to the top of the page and click on the userCP, there you will find a place to fill in your location. This info is an amazing help on this forum as often there is folks who are close by and can offer more detailed information and help. With more than 50 countries represented here location can be quite important... Sounds like you have some good experience in some areas, you'll find smiths here of every skill level. There are a lot of great basics info on the home page by following the getting started link, or search for other questions in the forums... just fair warning, pack a lunch and a tall cool drink before starting, you could be here a while! Look forward to seeing you around James
  2. and remember it has been a day of MIST and rain, so you will have no chance to stop on the wet pavement if you miss the portal...
  3. I enjoy a bit of wood working, but the planning makes my head hurt... Once I have all my math done and the project mapped out then I can proceed... not always so with hot metal, I often grab a piece of scrap heat it up and beat on it till something useful comes out with no drawn plan or sketch... I enjoy working from "native" lumber as when I take logs to a local saw mill I get true 2x4's and 1"X whatevers... I get exactly what I ordered. I also like that my home was built with the same logic although I was only 2 years old when it was built... it has made a few projects amazing easier and a few much harder as you can NOT drive a nail into those wall studs.
  4. Prayin for ya both... What a testimony of friendship and a giving spirit the giving of the oxygen equipment has offered, I also pray that each of us remembers this example that has been set before us.
  5. I'm sad to report being bad this year did not pay off. Santa left a small round tin of coal, three pea sized lumps... however the cost of coal must be prohibitive this year because the three pieces are actually plastic. An elf tells me that the tin of coal was purchased at Wallymart... how sad that ya can't even get real coal! On a brighter note my wife still loves me and she gave me the cash to go and buy the tripod I want for my video camera. Now I can record my hammering and hopefully make some adjustments to be easier on myself and more productive. James
  6. The MASS of those sticks times velocity equals pain

  8. Does it look like the mark was stamped in? Very interesting indeed... And the fact your wife is fueling your "habit" is great! I guess it is stamped as Key Keeper beat my post and says he recognizes the mark... If you fear using it send it on over to Indiana and I'll try it out for ya! James
  9. The proportions are off from the chinese hammers I have and sometimes use. How about some other pictures, is the squiggle line on the side a mark or what? James
  10. I'm doing my best to get out of the Grinch mood... So here is my best Saint Nick voice... MerrrrY Christmasss (followed by a sincere jolly laugh) Merry Christmas all!

  13. A couple questions if you don't mind... How are the branches attached? Any hints on the making of your wood grain tool? And if my 12 year old daughter is any indication, that would be a perfect gift and well received... James
  14. Years of seeing piped air in my grandfathers service station as a kid it was all black iron pipe as my wee mind remembers it was about 3/4", drain traps under every vertical rise (it was one of my jobs to drain the water out of the lines, what fun!)... Later when grandpa closed up shop dad went to work for his uncle. Uncle used plastic 1" pipe throughout his new auto repair shop, all went well for the first 16 months he was in business then one of the pipes blew at the fitting and injured a customer who was standing just outside the shop door. They dug 5 pieces of plastic pipe out of the mans chest and arm. Uncles insurance company refused payment due to the installation not being up to the standards recommended by the manufacturer of the compressor being used. Needless to say, I wouldn't recommend plastic for compressed air, black iron is going to be more expensive but won't be near as apt to being damaged by vibration, impact, or chemicals.
  15. What a great gift, I don't know the age of your sister... but I would think that this will be put to good use for years to come... James
  16. I found out though that H O R S E actually spells shop on my place. My bride had been wanting a horse since before we married and I finally gave in this past week. The rule before then was if you can't eat it, we don't raise it. My bride questioned the dogs and cats, I told her I was ok with Chinese or Korean food. However, we now have a 12yr old Tenn Walker... the key here is I now get the barn that has been used for storage to put my shop in. Too cold to start right now but step one will be to clean that bugger out and get the renovating done while she plays with the horse. I kind of think of the horse as rent on my shop... truth be known, I like the big beast too, but still don't have interest in eating him! YET!!! oh and since we have found a farrier that will shoe all 4 hooves for $65... I like my knees far too much to deprive a fella of his living!
